Anvelink Wins Second Straight Late Model Feature At Shawano
By Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (May 21, 2005) - The Shawano Speedway resumed its racing season Saturday night with a full field of cars on hand and a nice sized crowd. Nick Anvelink won his second straight WISSOTA Late Model feature, while Craig Bartz won the IMCA Modified feature. The IMCA Stock Car feature went to Jason Czarapata, with Jeff Curtian once again winning the Limited Late Model feature.

Tim Buhler jumped out to the early lead over Chris Carlson, Nick Anvelink, A.J. Diemel and Ron Berna in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Anvelink got by Carlson on the next lap before the first caution flag waved. Anvelink took the lead from Buhler two laps later, with Diemel following in second when another caution flag flew. On the restart, Diemel was off the pace with what appeared to be damaged to the right front. This moved Seegert to second, with Buhler, Tom Naeyaert and Carlson following.

Anvelink had a comfortable lead midway through the race, when the action was slowed for two more cautions. As soon as the race was restarted with eight laps remaining, Anvelink immediately began to pull away from the field with Seegert and Buhler holding down the second and third spots. Terry Anvelink also joined the top five at this time, after flying through the field after changing a flat tire early in the race. It was all Nick Anvelink, though, as he won his second straight feature at the Shawano Speedway. He was followed by Seegert, Buhler, Terry Anvelink and Ron Berna.

The IMCA Modified feature saw Paul Thorpe grab the early lead over Craig Bartz, Tom Haferkorn, Brad Rohloff and John Peters. Thorpe continued to lead over the next several laps, challenged several times by Bartz on the high-side, but always being able to fend off Bartz. Rohloff then began challenging Bartz for the second spot, while Jerry Muenster joined the top five.

The middle of the race was plagued by several caution flags, with one of them coming out when Jeremie Hedrick barrel-rolled several times in turn four. Hedrick was uninjured. When the race was restarted, Bartz was right on Thorpe’s rear bumper. With the race shortened due to the time limit, Bartz once again tried the high-side in turn one on the last lap. This time he ducked low in turn two and got a good run on Thorpe on the inside. He was able to make the pass, and go on to the victory. He was followed by Thorpe, Rohloff, Muenster and Lance Arneson.

Barry Van Stratten took the lead of the IMCA Stock Car feature on the third lap before being ambushed three laps later. It was at that time that Chas Van Ooyen pulled alongside Van Stratten, with Larry Karcz, Jason Czarapata and Kyle Frederick following three-wide when a caution came out. Van Ooyen grabbed the lead on the restart, with Rod Snellenberger, Kyle Frederick, Van Stratten and Karcz following.

Bruechert and Karcz swapped the third spot a couple times midway through the race, while Van Ooyen continued to lead. Czarapata then took the lead with four laps remaining. He held the lead until the final caution flag waved with two laps left. Czarapata continued to lead on the restart, with Bruechert moving up to second, and Frederick, Van Ooyen and Kevin Lamberies following. Lamberies passed Van Ooyen on the last lap, while Czarapata went on to win the race.

Jeff Curtin used his pole position starting spot to take the early lead over Chad Hohn, Luke Uttecht, Bob Schmidt and Jesse Peebles in the Limited Late Model feature. Uttecht moved to second on the fourth lap, with Schmidt, Peebles and Mike Kunschke following. As the race continued, the leaders began to spread out over the 1/2-mile track. Curtin went on to the convincing victory, his third of the season.

Racing action continues next Saturday night, with the action starting at 6:30 p.m.
