Anvelink Wins Late Model Feature With Last Lap Pass At Shawano
By: Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (May 7, 2005) - A brief rain shower didn’t dampen the racing
action at the Shawano Speedway, as more than 100 cars were in the pits for the
second straight week. Nick Anvelink won the WISSOTA Late Model feature, while
Wade Schutt won the IMCA Modified feature. The IMCA Stock Car feature went to
Rod Snellenberger, with Jeff Curtian once again winning the Limited Late Model
feature.
After an opening lap caution, Tom Naeyaert used his pole position starting
spot to jump out to the quick lead over M.J. McBride, Nick Anvelink, Randy
Markwardt and Troy Springborn in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Naeyaert
began to pull away a bit, while Springborn and Terry Anvelink tussled for the
fifth spot. Five laps into the race, Nick Anvelink began pressuring McBride
for the second spot, and took the spot before another caution flag flew.
Naeyaert continued to lead on the restart, but was immediately pressured by
Nick Anvelink, while Markwardt got by McBride. Anvelink was glued to
Naeyaert’s bumper over the next four laps, but couldn’t make the pass.
With the white flag waving, Anvelink drove to the outside of Naeyaert in turns
one and two, and made it stick, taking over the top spot. Naeyaert battled
back, and tried to duck underneath Anvelink in turn four, with the two making
contact. It was Anvelink first to the finish line, with Naeyaert, Markwardt,
Terry Casey and McBride following.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Mike Baily grabbed the early lead over Joe
Haferkorn, Nick Holtgen, Jeremy Hanson and John Peters. Haferkorn took the
lead on the second lap and began to pull away, when a caution came out the
next lap. Baily retook the lead on the restart, with Haferkorn and Wade Schutt
in close pursuit. Baily and Haferkorn raced side-by-side for the next two
laps, but it was Schutt taking the lead just past the halfway point.
With Schutt firmly in the lead, Haferkorn and Baily settled into the second
and third spots. The best action was for the fifth spot, where Charlie Wild
and Lance Arneson were swapping the spot each lap. When the checkered flag
waved, it was Schutt taking the win over Baily, Arneson, Hanson and Tom Schaal.
Rod Snellenberger jumped out to the early lead over Chas Van Ooyen, Steve
Kastning, Jeremy Christians and Larry Karcz Jr in the IMCA Stock Car feature.
Karcz moved to the third spot on the second lap, as Kyle Frederick also joined
the top five. With Snellenberger pulling away from the field, the first and
only caution of the race came out.
On the restart, Snellenberger continued to lead, with Karcz moving to second.
Jason Czarapata grabbed the third spot one lap later, while Dan Michonski
moved up to the fourth spot on the next lap. It was Snellenberger’s race, as
he took the win with Karcz, Czarapata, Michonski and Van Ooyen following.
The Limited Late Model feature saw Jesse Peebles jump out to the lead, with
Nate Yonker, Jeff Curtin, Matt Rindt and Jeff Deutscher following. Curtin
moved to second on the second lap. Peebles and Curtin began to pull away from
the rest of field. By the end of the fifth lap, Curtin made the pass for the
lead. Over the course of the rest of the race, Curtin pulled away, leaving
everyone else to scramble for positions. Curtin took the win, with Peebles,
Luke Uttecht, Bob Schmidt and Mike Kunschke following.
Racing action continues next Saturday night, with the action starting at 6:30
p.m.
