Springborn Cruises To WISSOTA Late Model Feature Win
By Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (Sept. 11, 2004) - The Shawano Speedway concluded its 2004 racing
season, with Troy Springborn winning the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Norm
Walbruck won the IMCA Modified feature, while Brian Bruechert won the IMCA
Stock Car feature. The Limited Late Model feature went to Jeff Curtin.
Tim Lemirande jumped out to the early lead over Cody Grosskruetz, Doug Blashe,
Tom Naeyaert and Troy Springborn in the 20-lap WISSOTA Late Model feature.
Blashe quickly took over the second spot on the second lap, while Springborn
also got by Naeyaert. Springborn then moved up to third place on the third
lap, and set his sights on Lemirande. It took Springborn a couple laps to
catch Lemirande, before taking over the lead on lap five.
Once in the lead, Springborn began pulling away from Lemirande, while Blashe,
Tim Buhler and Pete Parker were all in pursuit. Buhler grabbed the third spot
midway through the race, while Parker followed a couple laps later. With
Springborn still in the lead, Buhler ran down Lemirande and grabbed the
runner-up stop. A caution with three laps remaining bunched up the field. Once
the race was restarted, Springborn cruised to the victory over Buhler, Parker,
Naeyaert and Lemirande. It was Springborn’s seventh feature win of the year
at the Shawano Speedway.
In the IMCA Modified feature, John Peters grabbed the quick lead over Kyle
Oerdirk, Norm Walbruck, Brad Moeller and Jerry Muenster. Walbruck moved into
second on the next lap, while Mike Wedelstadt joined the top five. Over the
next several laps, Peters, Walbruck and Wedelstadt pulled away from the rest
of the field and ran as a pack, when the first caution of the race came out
midway through the race.
Peters maintained his lead on the restart, with Wedelstadt, Walbruck, Craig
Bartz and Muenster following. Wedelstadt quickly grabbed the top spot from
Peters, with Walbruck and Bartz following on the next lap, before another
caution flag flew. Wedelstadt continued to lead on the restart, with Walbruck
beginning to challenge for the top spot. Bartz then joined the battle for the
lead, as Wedelstadt, Bartz and Walbruck battled three-wide on a couple of
occasions. As the white flag flew, Wedelstadt held the lead, but Walbruck was
right on his rear bumper. Walbruck ducked underneath Wedelstadt in turns three
and four, pulled ahead of him, and beat him to the line to win his second
feature of the year. Wedelstadt, Julie McDermid, Bartz and Wade Schutt
followed Walbruck across the line.
Jon Wolf led the first lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature before Brian
Bruechert grabbed the top spot on the second lap. Over the next several laps,
Bruechert and Wolf began pulling away from the rest of the field, as Larry
Slater, Nate Michonski and Greg Gutt were all in pursuit. Wolf had something
break in the left front, dropping him from the race. This gave Bruechert a
huge lead, only to see that lead vanish when the caution flag flew with five
laps remaining.
On the restart, Bruechert continued to lead with Slater, Michonski, Mike
Ashenbrenner and Brett Wenzel following. Wenzel grabbed the fourth spot from
Ashenbrenner a couple laps later. There was no denying Bruechert, who went on
to win his fifth feature of the season.
In the Limited Late Model feature, Luke Uttecht jumped out to the early lead,
with Bob Schmidt, Jeff Curtin, Brian Jensen and Justin Ritchie following.
Ritchie moved up to fourth on the second lap. The race was then slowed for a
caution on lap five.
Uttecht led the first lap after the race was restarted, but gave up the lead
to Curtin on the next lap. Ritchie, Chad Hohn and Mike Kunschke were all in
pursuit. As the race went on, Curtin began pulling away from the field, while
Kunschke grabbed the fourth spot from Hohn. That’s the way it ended, with
Curtin winning his fifth feature of the year.
