Casey Flies To WISSOTA Late Model Win At Shawano Speedway
By Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (Aug. 21, 2004) - With only a few weeks of racing left at the Shawano Speedway, Terry Casey won his second WISSOTA Late Model feature of the year. Craig Bartz won his first IMCA Modified feature of the year, while Brian Bruechert won his third IMCA Stock Car feature. Rocky Miller won his first Limited Late Model feature of the year.

Terry Casey jumped out to the lead over Terry Anvelink, Todd Flannery, M.J. Hintz and Mark Mitchell in the WISSSOTA Late Model feature. Tom Naeyaert joined the top five on the second lap, as Hintz began challenging Flannery for third. Hintz grabbed third place on the fourth lap, and pulled alongside Anvelink a couple laps later, while Naeyaert also took the fourth spot from Flannery. With Casey firmly in the lead, the first and only caution came out on lap eight for a tangle between Flannery and A.J. Diemel.

Casey kept the lead on the restart, but Troy Springborn charged to second, and began putting heavy pressure on Casey, with Anvelink, Hintz and Naeyaert following. Springborn grabbed the lead on the next lap, and held it for four more laps before his car slowed and pulled into the pits. This gave the lead back to Casey. The best action was taking place behind Casey as Naeyaert and Ron Berna were on the move. Naeyaert had moved up to third, only to have Berna get by him. Berna also got by Anvelink and settled for second behind Casey, with Anvelink, Naeyaert and Gordie Seegert rounding out the top five.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Jeremie Hedrick jumped out to the early lead over Ron Figlinski, Paul Thorpe, Julie McDermid and Brad Rohloff. Rohloff quickly moved up to third place, as Craig Bartz came charging through the field and joined the top five. Hedrick was running the high groove, fending off the challenges of Rohloff and Bartz, when the caution came out. Point leader Wade Schutt pitted with a flat tire at this time.

Hedrick continued to lead on the restart, but Bartz was right on Hedrick’s rear bumper. It took only one lap for Bartz to grab the top spot, leaving Hedrick to battle with Rohloff and McDermid. Hedrick eventually fell out of the top five. Rohloff, McDermid and Mike Wedelstadt were racing in a pack fighting for the second spot, but there was no denying Bartz, as he went on to win his first feature of the year, ahead of Rohloff, Wedelstadt, McDermid and Eddie Muenster.

John Wolf led the first two laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature before Brian Bruechert took over the top spot, with B.J. Giese, Jason Czarapata and Jeff Brehmer rounding out the top five. Wolf’s car came to a stop in corners three and four with a broken front A-frame on lap six. When the race resumed, Jason Czarapata passed Bruechert for the lead, with Giese, Jeremy Christians and Rod Snellenberger following. Giese faded a bit, while Bruechert stayed right with Czarapata over the next several laps.

With six laps remaining, Bruechert regained the lead from Czarapata, before the final caution flag flew. Bruechert continued to lead on the restart, with Snellenberger pulling alongside him. Czarapata was still in the mix, still right on Bruechert’s rear bumper. Those three battled for the final laps, with Bruechert coming out on top over Czarapata, Snellenberger, Kevin Lamberies and Dan Michonski.

In the Limited Late Model feature, Rocky Miller jumped out to the quick lead over Brian Jensen, Bob Schmidt, Jesse Peebles and Larry Drefahl. It stayed that way for the next couple laps, when Schmidt grabbed the second spot from Jensen. Jensen began to fall back, as Miller began to pull away from the rest of the field.

By the time half the race was over, Tony Wudstrack and Jeff Curtin moved into the top five. Justin Ritchie joined the top five a couple laps later. Wudstrack began to gain a bit on Schmidt for second, but there was no stopping Miller, as he went on to win his first feature win of the year.

Racing action will continue next Saturday night, with the action starting at 6:30 p.m. For more information about the Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.com
