Casey Wins In Return Visit To Shawano Speedway
By Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (June 26, 2004) - New London’s Terry Casey made his return to
the Shawano Speedway a successful one, as he came out on top in the WISSOTA
Late Model feature. Wade Schutt was victorious in the IMCA Modified feature,
while Rod Snellenberger debuted a new car and won the IMCA Stock Car feature.
Justin Ritchie once again won the Limited Late Model feature.
Starting in the front row, Terry Casey jumped out to the quick lead over Greg
Dhein, Doug Blashe, Tim Buhler and A.J. Diemel in the 20-lap WISSOTA Late
Model feature. Diemel began charging toward the front, passing Buhler on the
next lap for fourth place. Casey began to pull away from the rest of the pack,
as Troy Springborn joined the top five on lap three. Dhein then faded,
dropping out of the top five, with Blashe, Diemel and Springborn all in a pack
jockeying for position.
Diemel came out ahead in the battle for the second spot, with Springborn
following him. Diemel would put some distance between himself and Springborn
as he tried to chase down Casey. With five laps remaining, and Casey still
firmly in the lead, Sprinborn was able to apply a little pressure on Diemel,
only to have Diemel pull away slightly. Nick Anvelink also joined the top five
at this time. There was no catching Casey, as he went on to win his first
feature of the season at the Shawano Speedway. Diemel, Springborn, Buhler and
Anvelink followed him across the line.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Tom Schaal jumped out to the early lead with
Mike Knapp, Brad Rohloff, Jerry Wilinski and Eddie Muenster following. Schaal
and Knapp battled for the next couple laps, with Schaal running the high side.
Three cautions early in the race slowed the action, with Schaal slowing and
retiring to the pits during the last caution. Wade Schutt inherited the lead
on the restart, with Mike Wedelstadt, Wilinski, Muenster and Rohloff in
pursuit.
Schutt and Wedelstadt distanced themselves from the rest of the field, leaving
Muenster and Rohloff to engage in a side-by-side battle for the third spot.
Muenster, running the low groove, held off Rohloff for several laps, but
Rohloff was finally able to make the pass with a couple laps to go. By that
time, Schutt was in control of the race, with a comfortable lead over
Wedelstadt. That’s the way it ended, with Schutt winning his third feature
of the year.
B.J. Giese was the early leader over Brian Bruechert, Jeff Brehmer, Cory
Lemirande and Kevin Lamberies in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Lemirande was on
the move in the early laps, following Bruechert past Giese on the fourth lap,
putting Bruechert in the lead and Lemirande in second. These two then raced
side-by-side before a caution came out. Rod Snellenberger vaulted to the lead
on the restart, with Bruechert, Lemirande, Shannon Volkman and Jeremy
Christians following.
Bruechert fought back, pulling alongside Snellenberger, attempting to gain the
lead back. Snellenberger was too strong, as he maintained the lead. This left
Bruechert to try and fend off the hard charging Christians. This battled went
until the last lap. Christians was able to make the pass stick, putting him in
second place, only to have Bruechert reclaim the spot on the last lap. When
the checkered flag fell, it was Snellenberger winning his third feature of the
season. He was followed by Bruechert, Christians, Volkman and Jason Czarapata.
Bob Schmidt assumed the lead early in the Limited Late Model feature over Chad
Hohn, Jeff Curtin, Justin Ritchie and Bud Lynn. Schmidt had a few car lengths
lead when the first caution flag flew. Schmidt continued to lead on the
restart, but was receiving heavy pressure from Ritchie and Curtin. Racing down
the backstretch, Curtin pulled to the inside of Schmidt, while Ritchie pulled
to the outside of Schmidt making it three-wide entering turn three. Schmidt
wound up spinning, creating a huge pile-up involving several cars.
Curtin was put to the rear, while Ritchie inherited the lead on the restart
and never looked back, as he went on to win his fifth feature of the year.
Jesse Peebles, Lynn, Jensen and Luke Uttecht followed him across the
line.
Racing action will continue next Saturday night, with the action starting at
6:30 p.m. For more information about the Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.com.
