Parker & Schutt Race To Feature Wins At Shawano Speedway
By: Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (August 2, 2003) - With rain all around the area, but not around
the Shawano Speedway, Pete Parker found himself in Victory Lane after winning
the 20-lap WISSOTA Late Model feature. Wade Schutt won his first feature of
the year at the Speedway in the IMCA Modified division, while Rod
Snellenberger won the IMCA Stock Car feature.
Pete Parker jumped out to the early lead over Terry Anvelink, Todd Flannery,
Luke Roffers and Tim Buhler in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Buhler began
pressuring Roffers for the fourth spot on the second lap, as Parker began
pulling out to a slight lead over Anvelink. Buhler disposed of Roffers on the
third lap, and started making his charge to Flannery. With Parker and Anvelink
still running first and second, Buhler pulled up to Flannery’s bumper on lap
seven.
By the midpoint of the race, Parker began encountering lapped traffic, which
allowed Anvelink to close the gap on first place. Buhler also worked his way
past Flannery at this time, and settled into the third spot. With eight laps
to go, Anvelink pulled up to Parker’s rear bumper, while Nick Anvelink and
A.J. Diemel challenged Roffers for the fifth spot. Over the next couple laps,
Parker pulled away from Anvelink, as he once again had a clear track ahead of
him. After a couple laps, though, Anvelink again began to reel in Parker, as
Buhler was also closing in on Anvelink. There would be no denying Parker,
though, as he went on to win his second feature of the year at the Shawano
Speedway. Terry Anvelink, Buhler, Nick Anvelink and Flannery rounded out the
top five.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Norm Walbruck grabbed the early lead over John
Peters, Wade Schutt, Eric Scribner and Joe White. Schutt moved into the second
spot on the next lap, and immediately began working on taking the lead from
Walbruck. Schutt did take the lead from Walbruck on the third lap, as the rest
of the field jockeyed for position. A caution just before the midpoint of the
race slowed the action. On the restart, Schutt continued to lead with Walbruck
following in second, Joe White moving up to third, Dave Diemel in fourth and
Scribner in fifth.
Schutt led the next two laps before another caution came out for an accident
involving Eddie Muenster and Joe Haferkorn, the top two drivers in the point
standings. Both drivers were uninjured, but done for the night. The race was
restarted several more times, with each time a caution flag coming out before
a lap could be completed. With 11 laps in the books, and rough track
conditions in corners, the race was called complete at that point. Schutt was
awarded the win, with Walbruck, White, John Berna and Dennis Young rounding
out the top five.
B.J. Giese jumped out to the early lead over Mike Brehmer, Cory Lemirande,
Jerry Wilinski and Brian Bruechert in the IMCA Stock Car feature. By the third
lap, with Giese still leading, Bruechert had worked his way up to second, as
Jason Czarapata also joined the top five. Three caution flags over the next
four laps slowed the action and bunched up the field. When the race was
restarted with half the race in the books, Giese continued to lead, with
Czarapata, Lemirande, Bruechert and Rod Snellenberger all in pursuit.
Snellenberger began making his way to the front, grabbing the third spot with
seven laps remaining. He then grabbed the runner-up spot on the next lap. He
continued his charge by moving into the top spot on the very next lap.
Snellenberger led the next three laps, with Giese, Czarapata, Lemirande and
Dan Michonski following, when the final caution in the race came out.
Snellenberger continued to lead on the restart. Czarapata began pressuring
Giese for second, and grabbed that position with two laps to go. There was no
catching Snellenberger, as he went on to win his fourth feature of the year.
He was followed by Czarapata, Giese, Larry Karcz and Michonski.
The MSA Sprint Car feature was canceled with less than 10 laps completed
because of several cautions, with the last caution coming out when David
O’Neal flipped his car several times in corner four. The race could not be
restarted before the 11 p.m. curfew, ending the night of racing. The Limited
Late Model feature was also canceled due to the curfew.
Racing action continues next Saturday, with the action getting underway at
6:30 p.m. For more information about the Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.com.
