Brian Mullen Gets Long Awaited Return To Victory Lane At Seymour
Seymour, August 27- A beautiful night greeted everyone to the Seymour Speedway
Sunday night in what turned out to be a record setting night on several
levels.
An all time record field of 164 cars signed in and ran 311 laps on a smooth,
fast 1/3 mile banked oval.
Five features saw three first time winners this season. There were 4 divisions
that crowned champions with 3 becoming first time N.E.W DIRT title holders.
The Street Stocks began the feature portion of the program with the point
leaders tied entering the race. An opening lap crash ended the battle when
defending champion, Jeremy Wiitala, got involved and slammed the outside wall
in turn 4, ending his night. The co-point leader, Harley Simon, was ahead of
the incident and had to finish at least one spot ahead of Wiitala to clinch
the title.
The event saw several cautions with Joe Wittmann leading the way from the
start. He was heavily challenged by Ken Woodke, Kyle Schroeder, Todd Everard
and by lap 5, Harley Simon. Wittmann was running the outside line and the pack
behind was spread across the width of the track. A final caution appeared on
lap 11 and set up a time limit finish. Schroeder was able to pull even with
Wittmann on the restart and pulled ahead as the white flag was dropped.
Everard, Simon, Woodke and Bob Czarapata were tight behind the leaders. In
turn one, Everard slipped a bit and was touched by Simon, and spun into the
infield. Schroeder outran Wittmann to the finish to record his first career
feature win. Simon crossed in third with Woodke, Czarapata and Bill Kelsey
behind. The final finish saw Everard given his spot back to finish third and
Simon dropped to the back , finishing 16th, which still earned him his first
ever hometown track title. He becomes the 18th different champion in 19 years.
The IMCA Stock Cars took the track next with the top 4 only 12 points
apart.
Mike Weitor grabbed the lead and held on through 3 cautions in the first 6
laps. The race went the distance after the restart, with the field running
three and four wide all the way through the pack. Weitor was running the
middle groove with title contender, Jamie Colwell hugging the inside line and
point leader, Rod Snellenberger, running the outside line. Colwell and
Snellenberger sandwiched Weitor for several laps. Colwell was scored as the
leader a couple times before Weitor again took charge. Snellenberger moved
into second and Kyle Fredrick made a quick move into third. Fredrick, also
running the inside line and Snellenberger, again sandwiched Weitor for a
couple laps. After swapping the lead a couple more times, Fredrick was able to
hook up on the inside and started to pull away from the battle on lap 15. He
ran alone at the front to the finish to pick up his first feature win of the
season. Snellenberger and Colwell continued their battle to the finish for
second with Snellenberger crossing the line first and in the process clinched
his third career Seymour division title. Colwell took the third place finish
in the race and finished the point season tied for second with Fredrick, 9
points behind the champion. Chaz Van Ooyen, Jr came from the back to finish
fourth in the race followed by Brandon Czarapata, his first night out in a new
car, and Shawn Wagner.
The Budweiser IMCA Modifieds took the track with Jarrod Anvelink taking charge
at the start of the main followed by Russ Huxford, Jerry Wilinski, Mike
Mullen, Brian Drexler and Chad Wilcox. This pack also spread out running the
full width of the track three and four cars wide. Anvelink ran the outside to
perfection over the first half of the race with Wilinski challenging inside,
On lap 8, Wilcox got crossed up out of turn 2 and sat cross wise on the back
chute. Jay Matthias had no where to go a slammed the stalled car. No one was
hurt, and Wilcox was able to drive away and return to the race. Matthias was
done for the night with heavy damage. From the restart, the race went the
distance.
Anvelink continued to lead the way with Wilinski, Drexler, Brian Mullen, Mike
Mullen and track champion, Benji LaCrosse right behind. In 2 laps, Mullen
wrested the runner up spot from Wilinski and pulled even with the leader.
Mullen took the top spot on lap 12 and started to build a lead over the field.
Anvelink battled with Mike Mullen and LaCrosse over the next 6 laps. LaCrosse
was able to move into the second spot with 3 laps left and closed on the
leader but not enough to mount a challenge. Mullen ran to his first feature
win here since June 20, 2004 with LaCrosse in second. Anvelink took third with
Mike Mullen running to his best finish this season in fourth. Jared Siefert
came from the back of the field to take fifth and Tim Van De Hei was
sixth.
Troy Springborn took off into the lead of the WISSOTA Late Model main followed
by Todd Jensema, Terry Anvelink, point leader Tim Buhler, Nick Anvelink and
A.J. Diemel. Buhler moved into the runner up spot on lap 5 with Diemel moving
into third 1 lap later. Diemel took over second on lap 8. A lone caution
erased Springborns huge lead one lap later. Springborn took off after the
restart and it took several laps for Diemel to reel him back in. The pair ran
side by side for 2 laps before Diemel pulled into the lead for good on lap 15.
Springborn chased him for the final 5 laps but could not mount a challenge.
Diemel claimed a division leading 3rd feature win with Springborn second. Nick
Anvelink crossed in third ahead of Buhler. Pete Parker took fifth with Justin
Ritchie rounding out the top six.
Mike Prey led the opening lap of the 4 Cylinder main with Ben Daoust taking
charge on lap 2. Chad Guyette, Kevin Birr, Matt Oreskovich and Andy Kleczka
lined up behind after a couple laps. Several cautions slowed the pace and
caused a time shorted race.
Daoust led the way until point leader, Tim Jorgenson, grabbed the lead on lap
13. Jorgenson ran off with his third feature win of the season and in doing
so, clinched his first track title here. Kleczka finished the run in second
with Brad Willoquette taking third. Daoust finished in fourth with Jamie
Mueller and Josh Novak rounding out the top six.
The win by Jorgenson completed a weekend sweep, also winning Friday at
Luxemburg and Saturday in Sturgeon Bay.
The Powder Puff races had to be postponed because of track curfew and will be
run this week to close out the 2006 season.
