Seymour Tri Oval Raceway Gets One In
by Dave Panske
Seymour, July 18- Mother Nature finally co-operated and allowed racing to
return to the Seymour Tri Oval Raceway following three weeks off due to rain
and the fair. It was a big night with 132 cars filling a full program on a
beautiful track with Hooters as the nights sponsor, an American Flag giveaway
by Fly Me Flag Co and a huge fireworks display throughout the night.
Steve Baker set the pace for the first 2 circuits of the IMCA Stock Car main.
A shuffle out of the tri oval on lap 3 found Rod Snellenberger as the new
leader followed by Larry Karcz, Jr, Brandon Czarapata, Jerry Schaalma, Jamie
Colwell and Tyler Rassmussen. Czarapata moved into the runner up spot on lap
6. The lone caution appeared on lap 8 when point leader, Jeremy Christians,
lost an engine and stalled in turn 2.
On the restart, the lead pack came together on the front chute with Czarapata
sneaking through into the lead. Snellenberger held second with Jason Czarapata
moving into third, Travis Van Straten into fourth, Colwell, Rasmussen and
Karcz in line right behind.
Brandon was able to pull away from the pack a bit over the final laps to
secure his second feature win of the season. Snellenberger led the tight pack
behind to finish second. Jason Czarapata, Van Straten, Colwell and Kyle
Fredrick rounded out the top six,
Several cautions over the first four laps of the Street Stock main kept the
field bunched. Phil Hiles was the leader when the green appeared for good on
lap 5 with Dan Rihm, Joe Johnson, Jeremy Wiitala, point leader, Darren Otto,
Bill Kelsey and Brian Kock behind.
Hiles was pulling away from the pack when Otto broke into the runner up spot
on lap 7, and set out to chase the leader down.
The race was tight the rest of the way for third place. Johnson, Wiitala,
Kevin Charles, Koch and Kelsey swapped places several times.
Up in front, Otto was slowly closing in on Hiles and with five remaining,
pulled high. The pair ran side by side until Otto took over the lead as the
white flag appeared, and drove off with his second feature flag of the season.
Hiles was right behind in second. Wiitala won the battle for third with
Johnson settling for 4th, Koch 5th and Charles, his first time out this
season, rounded out the top six.
The WISSOTA Lates took the track with several cautions slowing a fast hard
fought event. Nick Anvelink pulled into the lead on the start followed by Greg
Dhein, Randy Markwardt, Doug Klemp, Travis Spaulding, Mark Mitchell and Tom
Naeyaert. Terry Anvelink brought out the first caution on lap 5 with a spin
and restarted at the rear. After a lap 7 caution, a 7 lap sprint saw Anvelink
hold the lead with Spaulding and A.J. Diemel battling right behind. Tim Buhler
and Naeyaert were tight for 4th. The race in the front was getting interesting
until a series of three cautions starting on lap 14 kept action to a minimum.
A final run to the finish saw Anvelink hold off Diemel for his third feature
win this season. Buhler was in third. Terry Anvelink worked his way from the
back into fourth place with Naeyaert and Gordie Seegert rounding out the top
six,
A multi car spin on the opening lap of the IMCA Modified main caused the only
caution of the race. Kyle Meyers led the opening lap when racing resumed
followed by Joel Schmit, Dan Deau, Mike Klenz, Mike Cole, Scott Boyea and
Scott Mullen. Deau took the lead on lap 3 and pulled away as the pack stayed
tight behind. Veteran Schmit and 2nd year driver Meyers swapped the runner up
spot several times with Cole, Mullen and Klenz in the mix.
Mullen was slowly moving to the front and finally worked into the runner up
spot on lap 15. Deau had built a huge lead, but after the mid point, started
to drop the pace a bit, When Mullen broke into second, Deau was in sight and
Mullen set out to run the leader down. Mullen was able to close in and move
into the lead on lap 17, driving off with his third feature win of the year.
Deau managed to take the runner up finish with Schmit taking third. Meyers
complete his best run ever in fourth. Mike Wedelstadt came from the back of
the field to place fifth. Brian Drexler, making his first run of the season
here, rounded out the top six.
Greg Banker took the lead at the start of the 4 cylinder main but several
cautions prevented him from pulling away from the field. Point leader, Jasper
Drengler, moved into second on lap 6, and after the final caution on lap 9,
battled hard for the lead on the outside. Drengler took the top spot on lap
11, but Banker stayed right there and on lap 13, re-took the lead. Banked held
off the charges of Drengler over the final 2 laps to win his first Tri Oval
main of the season. Drengler was a close second followed by Matt Maleport, D.J.
Jorgenson, Stan Adamski and Matt Gilson.
Next Sunday will be the fans chance to run the Trio Oval in the Flintstone
race.
Also announced was an addition to the 2004 schedule as N.E.W . DIRT will run
