Thunderhill's Bayou clash To Benefit Gulf Coast

September 12, 2005 - Sturgeon Bay, WI:  Joining relief efforts from around the country, the Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway in Sturgeon Bay will close out its season this Saturday night with a complete six-division racing program dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

Dubbed "The Bayou Clash", nearly 100% of the proceeds taken in on the evening will be donated to the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation, earmarked for disaster relief.

The card will feature IMCA-style Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks, along with Street Stocks, ThunderBombs and Sport 4s on the third-mile clay oval.  Modifieds will run for $1,000 to win, while the Stock Cars will vie for a $500 top prize.

According to Thunderhill promoter Bryan Wodack, nearly every dollar spent by fans will be included in the donation.  "Our main concessions have been donated for the night by Flanigan Distributing, Triangle Distributing, and Econo Foods," he said.  "That means we can donate all of the proceeds from our food and beverage stand, as well as all the grandstand revenue to the Fund.  If a fan spends $10 at the gate and another $10 on food, they've just donated $20 to hurricane relief.  Our staff is donating their time.  We do have a few expenses like insurance, some advertising and the purse, but with sponsorship help and the pit passes, we should be able to handle those."

Any proceeds from the Raceway's apparel sales will also be donated, as well as revenue generated from the sale of special event T-shirts and other fund-raising activities.  "If someone wants to pitch in with additional sponsorship, or donate prizes, we'd gladly accept them," Wodack added.

The evening will mark the first post-Boone racing event for Thunderhill regular Benji Lacrosse, the newly crowned IMCA Super National Modified champion.  Lacrosse topped a field of 340 modifieds from all over the country this past week in Boone, Iowa to become Wisconsin's first ever Super National winner.  Lacrosse will be honored, as will other Boone competitors.  That list includes five-time track champ Todd Dart who placed third in the Efkamp Race of Champions, and Sean Jerovetz and Jay Matthias, both Sturgeon Bay regulars who qualified for the Super National modified final.

The IMCA National Headquarters will be contributing several commemorative items that will be included in the fund raising efforts.

In deciding to go with the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation, Wodack noted the sports connection as the deciding factor.  "There are several very worthy organizations providing relief efforts right now, so this was a tough decision," Wodack said.  "We chose the Fourward Foundation because this is a sporting event in Wisconsin, and donating to an organization headed by one of Wisconsin's most recognizable sports personalities seemed like a natural.  Brett and Deanna were personally touched by the hurricane, so this just seems like a good way to show support to them from the community as well."

The first qualifying heats will take to the clay at 6:00PM, with last chance qualifiers and six features to follow.  With Boone complete, and most tracks in the area off for the night, a huge field of cars is anticipated.

The Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway is located at the John Miles County Park on Sturgeon Bay's east side.  For more information, call 920-743-7052.  The track's website is www.racethunderhill.com
