Mahlberg Wins At Thunderhill
By Greg Aregoni

Rick Mahlberg won his first career IMCA sanctioned feature on Saturday Night, at The Forest County Potawatomi Thunderhill Raceway.   Mahlberg used a lap seven pass to take the lead, and dominated the rest of the field.

Eddie Anschutz won his fifth feature of the season, in the Mays Sport Center IMCA Hobby Stocks.   Faron Beilke held off stiff competition from both Scott Reinhardt and Todd Polster in his Dairy Queen Street Stock feature win.   Benji Lacrosse took the lead halfway through the Budweiser IMCA Modified feature, and cruised to his third feature win of the season.   Tony Everard won his second feature of the season, in the Door County Motorsports 4-cylinder division.   The bomber/enduro feature win went to Ryan Johnson.   Merlin Armstrong won the Vintage Modified feature race.

Faron Beilke used his outside front row starting spot to grab the lead in the Street Stock feature.  Todd Polster immediately jumped on the back bumper of Beilke, but could not make a move.  Scott Reinhardt was able to catch both cars.  When Polster went down low, Reinhardt used the high-line to pass Polster.  Reinhardt now had his chance to make his move, but never had enough to get past Beilke.  Beilke held on to win his first career Dairy Queen Street Stock feature.  Beilke was followed by Reinhardt, Polster, Von Eytcheson, and Dennis Wiedner.

The Wulf Brother’s IMCA Stockcar feature was up next, with Mark Derenne jumping to the early lead.  Derenne kept his lead, until Rick Mahlberg shot to the inside on lap 10.  Mahlberg got the lead and never looked back.  Derenne was pressured by Charlie Kroll and Troy Muench the rest of the way.  Mahlberg held on, in the caution free race to win his first career IMCA sanctioned feature win.  Derenne, Kroll, Troy Muench, and Shawn Kilgore followed Mahlberg at the line.  Jamie Suchochi claimed the motor of Troy Muench.  Claim was accepted.

Dave Zeitler looked like the man to beat in the Budweiser IMCA Modified feature event early on in the race.  Zeitler set the pace over Billy Lemieux and James Tebon.  Benji Lacrosse made his way into the top four, and set his sights on the leaders.  Benji knocked off both Tebon and Lemieux in two consecutive laps.  Lacrosse caught Zeitler, and on lap 11 made the pass down low.  Lacrosse took off, and was never challenged in winning his third feature of the season.  “The car worked really well tonight.  I would like to thank my mom and dad for all of their support with the racecar.” Benji Lacrosse on his feature win.  Zeitler, Lemieux, Tebon, and Todd Dart rounded out the top five.

It was double payout night for the Hobby Stocks.  Kevin Laughlin led the opening two laps, before being over-taken by Keith Kickbusch in the Mays Sport Center IMCA Hobby Stock feature.  Kickbusch used the high-line for his pass, and continued to use the top-side of the track.  Eddie Anschutz quickly had his spot that he wanted on the track. “I figured if I could get down low and hug the tires it would be the fastest way around the track.” Anschutz on why he chose the low-line.  Anschutz shot to the inside of Kickbusch and grabbed the lead.  Tony Schlei passed Kickbusch, and made his way to Anschutz.  Anschutz stayed low and Schlei was never able to make a pass.  Anschutz picked up his fifth feature win of the season followed by Schlei, Kickbusch, Laughlin, and Tom Brumlic.  With Anschutz’s win he regained the point lead.

Tony Everard won the Door County Motorsports 4 cylinder feature over Kenny Malcore and Kip Burlo.   This was his second feature win of the season.

Ryan Johnson won the Bomber/Enduro feature.

Merlin Armstrong won the Vintage Modified feature over Bill Behm.

The WDLMA will return to Thunderhill Wednesday Night August 10th , for the opening of the Door County Fair.  IMCA-style Modified and IMCA-style stockcars will also be on hand.  Racing will start at 6:30.
