Dart Makes It Two In A Row For The Door County Fair At The Hill
Door County Fair - Special Edition; Thursday, August
12, 2004
By Dan Lewis
(Thunderhill Raceway - Sturgeon Bay, WI) The Door County Fair opened
with two exciting nights of racing at John Miles Park in Sturgeon Bay.
The Wisconsin Dirt Late Model Association along with IMCA Mods and Stocks
opened the fair on Wednesday night under the threat of showers. Thursday
night’s event was a special edition of the regular Saturday night show with
five exciting divisions putting on a fanfare for the race fans with a 2004
season record car count.
In the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Algoma’s Todd Dart put on a clinic of his
own, taking the feature win on both fair nights, dealing three main event wins
to Dart, the defending 2003 track champion. Charlie Kroll, Algoma, won
his third T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car feature of the season. May’s
Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock Marcus Moede, Casco, scored his first feature
win. AmericInn Street Stock rookie Todd Polster, Baileys Harbor, won his
third feature and Sport Four Ken Malcore of Milwaukee came away with his sixth
feature victory. Kelsey Racing was the special night’s sponsor.
In the Budweiser IMCA Modified main, drivers got off to a rough start with
multiple car spins on the fast clay oval track. After several restarts,
rookie driver James Tebon, Algoma, was able to set the pace ahead of Green
Bay’s Mark Berglund and Billy LeMieux of Sturgeon Bay. Tebon’s move
to the inside to take the groove away from LeMieux set up a four-wide pass by
Dart in turn two. Dart grabbed a handful of wheel mid-pack to get in
front of challengers Mike Cole of Baileys Harbor and Green Bay’s Jared
Siefert.
Cole and Siefert combined forces to go after a struggling LeMieux. But
it was race leader Tebon’s misfortune that set the stage for the remainder
of the event. After leading the first seven laps of the 20-lap event,
Tebon pulled up lame, handing over the lead to Dart. Dart took advantage
of Tebon’s breakdown and went on for the win. Dart was joined by
points leader Jeremy Jacobs of Algoma at the front of the pack, but it was too
late for Jacobs to better his position.
Jacobs finished second to Dart with second year driver Benji LaCrosse,
Luxemburg, finishing third at the checkers. Cole hung on to finish
fourth with Suamico’s Sean Jerovetz rounding out the top five.
Kiel’s Eric Scribner and Julie McDermid, Fremont, each won their respective
semi-features. Earlier heat winners included Sean Jerovetz, Jared
Siefert, and Benji LaCrosse.
Kewaunee’s Jamie Suchocki paced the field of T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock
Cars in the early going of the feature event, but it was second row starter
Charlie Kroll, Algoma, that nabbed the lead away on lap four in the 18-lap
event. Kroll had his hands full with last year’s champion Kewaunee’s
Shawn Kilgore, who was hungry for a win after three top-three feature finishes
in recent weeks. Kroll was able to take the lead while Kilgore shadowed
him through much of the race.
Jeff Vlies, Brussels, and last week’s winner Matt Junio, Casco, battled it
out to join up with race leaders Kroll and Kilgore. Troy Muench of Green
Bay ran hard against points leader Craig Paque, Algoma and Wednesday’s main
winner Rod Snellenberger of Pulaski. Kroll held off Kilgore for the win,
his third feature win of the season. Vlies held on to finish third with
Junio in tow. Paque took home fifth after passing Muench on the last
lap.
The semi-feature win went to Kyle Frederick of Gillett. Heat winners in
the Stock class included Vlies, along with Kilgore and Ryan LeMieux of
Sturgeon Bay.
“Super Dave” Serrahn of Algoma and Dwayne Mertens, Luxemburg, paced the
early laps of the May’s Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock feature event.
Each shared the lead for the first two circuits but it was points leader Ed
Anschutz of Algoma that took the sweeping pass around the race leaders to
capture the number one spot. Serrahn and Mertens fell victim next to the
hard charging Denmark’s Tom Brumlic and Jeff Lautenbach, Sturgeon Bay.
Brumlic was able to catch Anschutz but was unable to pass the race leader and
on the last lap, both race leaders got caught up in lap traffic.
Anschutz and Brumlic made contact causing Brumlic to spin and take some hard
licks from passing cars. The hardest impact was delivered by Roger
LaViolette. The accident put the race at an end with first place being
credited to Marcus Moede of Casco. Second went to Kewaunee’s Keith
Kickbusch and third to Maynard Hegnet of Sturgeon Bay. Mertens and
Serrahn completed the top-five. Brumlic was treated at the track for a
neck injury.
Earlier heat winners included Jeff Lautenbach and rookie driver Dave Serrahn.
AmericInn Street Stock rookie driver Todd Polster, of Baileys Harbor, grabbed
the lead away from Dave Baenen of New Franken in the early going of
Thursday’s feature event, but fell prey to Sturgeon Bay’s Tom Daubner one
lap later. Sturgeon Bay’s James Anderson joined the race leaders with
Daubner looking strong.
At midrace, Polster was able to hook up on the bottom of the race surface and
retake the lead on lap 8 of the 15-lap main. Daubner fell back to third
place in the late going as Green Bay’s Jeremy Wiitala passed him on the
inside. Polster was able to hold on for his third feature win of the
season. Wiitala finished second with Daubner third. Anderson and
Sturgeon Bay’s Scott Reinhardt
finished fourth and fifth.
Earlier heat winners were Scott Reinhardt, Forestville’s Von Eytcheson, and
to rookie Mike Pierrard of Green Bay.
In the Sport 4 division, Milwaukee’s Ken Malcore won the 10-lap feature,
followed by D.J. Jorgenson of Oneida. Green Bay’s Butch Beyers
finished third in the feature after winning the earlier heat race. Race
fans were treated to a scary flip on the backstretch wall by Chad “Roller
Coaster” Williams, Brussels. Williams walked away from the rollover
with a wave to the crowd.
Budweiser IMCA Modified, T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car, May’s Sports
Center IMCA Hobby Stock, AmericInn Street Stock divisions along with the
Sport-4 class compete weekly on Saturday nights, with competition getting
underway at 6 p.m.
This week’s Saturday night event is sponsored by Miller Lite!
With only two points nights left, two of the five divisions have a one-point
difference between their points leaders and two other divisions are separated
by no more than 12 points. Points for features can be as few as 20
points and as many as 40 points per race event, making some tight racing for
the balance of the season!
Thunderhill Raceway is located at John Miles Park, the site of the Door County
Fairgrounds, just off Highways 42/57, and west on County Trunk T.
