Maurer Takes Classic Win In Coca-Cola Night At The Hill
Saturday, July 17, 2004
By Dan Lewis

(Thunderhill Raceway - Sturgeon Bay, WI)  Picture perfect weather and track conditions added up to another successful race night at Thunderhill Raceway on Saturday night.  In the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, the fast track conditions led to some great multi-lane racing as DePere’s Dean Maurer swept the modified events after an earlier heat win in only his fourth trip to the “HIll” this season.  Charlie Kroll, Algoma, won his second T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car feature of the year.  May’s Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock points leader Ed Anschutz, Algoma, took home his second main event win along with his sweep.  AmericInn Street Stock Aaron Thornton, Maplewood, won his third feature of the year and Sport Four Chad Williams came away with his fourth feature victory.  Coca-Cola was the night’s sponsor, helping to provide Big Wheel race entertainment and provided a beautiful assortment of trophies for the top three finishers in all five divisions.

In the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Dean Maurer took off with the early race lead, taking charge for the first four circuits of the main event.  His brother, Doug led for the next lap as it was looking like the “Dean and Doug Show”.  Dean regained the lead and held on until the last two laps of the event and Doug held strong, but slipped to third when Algoma’s Felix Dart came up to take the lead on the final two go-rounds.  Dart was followed to the front by Luxemburg’s Jay Matthias in the closing laps.  At the checkers, it was Dart taking the win only to be followed up with a post-race disqualification.  Dean Maurer was awarded the win, followed by Matthias and Doug Maurer.  Randy LeMieux Jr. finished fourth and Sean Jerovetz took fifth.  Heat winners were Kevin Sternard, along with brothers Doug and Dean Maurer.  Green Bay’s VanDeHei won the semi-feature.

T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car driver Shawn Havel, Brussels held on to his early feature lead as long as he could but the young, heat-winning rookie driver could not hold off the more-experienced drivers.  Hard-charging Charlie Kroll, Algoma, brought his Ford Thunderbird to the front and stayed there.  Points leader, Troy Muench, Green Bay, made a late-race charge inside some strong competition including Shawn Kilgore and Tracy Koontz to finish second.  Craig
Paque, Algoma, finished third followed by Koontz and Dave Bouche.  Heat winners for the night included Bernie Reinhardt, Havel and Tony Bouche.  Corey Haen won the semi-feature.

In the May’s Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock feature event, Dwayne Mertens and Jeff Lautenbach grabbed the early race lead only to fall victim to a hard-charging Keith Kickbusch.  Kickbusch looked to be the man to beat, but it was Ed Anschutz that came out the victor in the final laps, taking the lead racing the outside lane.  Kickbusch, Kewaunee, held on for second followed by Dave DeGrave, Luxemburg.  Evan Madden, Algoma and Casco’s Marcus Moede rounded out the top five.  Madden and Anschutz won their respective heat events.

AmericInn Street Stock feature winner Aaron Thornton, Maplewood, took his car three-wide in the feature race in his quest for the number one spot, inside Thom Terrien and Todd Wagner of Sturgeon Bay.  Thornton swept the night, taking his third feature win of the year.  Todd Polster finished second to Thornton and points leader Jeremy Wiitala finished third.  James Iverson and Darren Otto finished fourth and fifth.  Earlier heat winners were Polster, Thornton and Faron Beilke.  Scott Iverson won the earlier semi feature.

In the Sport 4 division, Feature winner Chad Williams swept the night with a heat race win as well.

Budweiser IMCA Modified, T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car, May’s Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock, AmericInn Street Stock divisions along with the Sport-4 class compete weekly on Saturday nights, with competition getting underway at 6 p.m.

Next week’s Saturday night event is sponsored by Star 97.7 FM!

One of two special nights of racing has been slated for Wednesday night, August 11 when the Forest County Potawatomi-sponsored 2nd Annual Dirt Late Model ShootOut opens the Door County Fair.  Late Models, IMCA Mods and IMCA Stocks will be featured.  A second night of racing will be on tap on Thursday, August 12, when all five exciting divisions compete under the lights for the Door County Fair crowd.  Points will be awarded for the Thursday night event with August 14th being a night off for the drivers.

Thunderhill Raceway is located at John Miles Park, the site of the Door County Fairgrounds, just off Highways 42/57, and west on County Trunk T.   For more information call 920-743-7052 or 920-746-0387, the track phone number.   The track’s website is www.racethunderhill.com
