Jacobs Slices His Way To First Feature Win Of 2004 At The Hill
Saturday, June 26, 2004
By Dan Lewis
(Thunderhill Raceway - Sturgeon Bay, WI) Thunderhill Raceway resembled
an asphalt track on Saturday night after the competition was over. The
smooth, glossy surface held throughout the night of a record turnout of IMCA
Mods. In the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Jeremy Jacobs sliced his way to
his first 2004 win. Repeat feature winners included T Simon Jewelers
IMCA Stock Car defending track champion Shawn Kilgore, May’s Sports Center
IMCA Hobby Stock Keith Kickbusch, AmericInn Street Stock Aaron Thornton along
with defending champ, Sport Four Ken Malcore. Sonny’s Pizzeria
sponsored the Fan Photo Night with nearly one quarter of the field parking on
the midway pre-race to sign autographs and hand out photos to early-arriving
race fans.
In the Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Algoma’s Jeremy Jacobs survived an opening
lap spin in the front row and subsequent restart, and carefully maneuvered his
way past early race leader Randie Back. Back led the first four circuits
before giving up the race lead to Jacobs. Jacobs was quickly followed by
Benji LaCrosse and Todd Dart. Experienced dry slick drivers were able to
find the bite necessary to move up through the pack. Jacobs had that
task mastered as he took home his first feature win of the season. A
very consistent LaCrosse finished second, followed by Dart, Back and rookie
driver James Tebon. Consi winners included Scott Boyea of Abrams and
Frog Station’s Dan Ratajczak. Heat winners were Dean Maurer, Mike
Cole, Darrell Massart and Sean Jerovetz.
T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car Corey Haen, Sturgeon Bay, got a great start
off of the front row, leading the first six laps of the 18-lap feature race,
but it was a persistent Mike Wietor that found the outside groove and
passed Haen. Wietor looked to be the man to beat and it was Shawn
Kilgore that took it to task. Kilgore got by Wietor and raced on to his
third feature win of the year. Wietor finished second, his best showing
of 2004. Patience was the key for Craig Paque, finishing third while
Bernie Reinhardt and Pat Davister rounded out the top five. Earlier heat
winners were Charlie Kroll, Haen, and Tony Bouche.
In the May’s Sports Center IMCA Hobby Stock feature event, Denmark’s Tom
Brumlic was looking like he was going to repeat last week’s performance by
leading nearly two thirds of the event, but it was a hard-charging Keith
Kickbusch, of Kewaunee, that took control of the race with only three laps to
go. Kickbusch sliced his way to the front from his fourth row starting
spot, passing Marcus and Derek Moede in the process. At the checkers, it
was Kickbusch, Brumlic and then Eddie Anschutz crossing the line followed by
Marcus Moede and Wayne Moore. Brumlic and Anschutz won earlier heat
events.
The fifth row starting spot proved to be just the ticket for the AmericInn
Street Stock feature event winner Maplewood’s Aaron Thornton. Thornton
was just one of four repeat winners on Saturday night. Front-row starter
Todd Polster, Baileys Harbor, was strong out of the starting blocks, leading
the way for ten laps. Darren Otto shadowed Polster for much of the race
until falling victim to Thornton after a mid-race caution and restart.
Thornton took the 23-car field to the finish along with Polster and
Otto. Fourth and fifth went to James Anderson and John Sternard.
Earlier heat winners were Polster, Von Eytcheson, and Thornton.
In the Sport 4 division, Algoma’s Ken Malcore was in winning form, taking
his front-row starting mount to his third feature win in the last four
weeks. Brussels’ Chad Williams won the heat race.
Budweiser IMCA Modified, T Simon Jewelers IMCA Stock Car, May’s Sports
Center IMCA Hobby Stock, AmericInn Street Stock divisions along with the
Sport-4 class compete weekly on Saturday nights, with competition getting
underway at 6 p.m.
Next week’s event is the Budweiser- Flanigan Distributing Night at
Thunderhill Raceway!
A special night of racing has been slated for Wednesday night, August 11 when
the Forest County Potawatomi-sponsored 2nd Annual Dirt Late Model ShootOut
opens the Door County Fair. Thunderhill Raceway is located at John
Miles Park, the site of the Door County Fairgrounds, just off Highways 42/57,
and west on County Trunk T. For more information call 920-743-7052
