Repeat Winners In Round Two Of Summer Shootout
by John Wiedemann – racingwisconsin.com

(Milwaukee, WI – June 15, 2005) – Week number two of the Milwaukee Summer Shootout Series at the Milwaukee Mile produced another evening of great racing and a bunch of repeat winners.  Curt Gnatzig, Davey Cox and Michael Cooter were joined by James Hanson in the winners circle of the “Mini-Mile”.  Because of the inclement weather in the area, the evening’s schedule of racing was shortened to a heat and feature race for each class.  The racers responded with some fast and furious racing.

The Allison Legacy cars made their first appearance at the Milwaukee Mile.  James Hanson took his famous looking number three car from the third position on the grid to the lead on the first lap of the heat race.  Nick Beinlich and Adam Carlson both spun on lap three coming through the fourth turn.  Carlson would get going first and take over second place.  The order stayed the same through the finish with Hanson winning, Carlson second and Beinlich in third place. Hanson started for the feature and the group ran nose to tail until caution came out on lap three for Carlson’s car spinning on the back straight.  Hanson again took control when the green flag waved.  Carlson would fight Beinlich on the closing laps, finally getting by for second with two laps to go.  Hanson took the feature win followed by Carlson and Beinlich.

Micheal Cooter again dominated the Bandolero class by winning both the heat and feature races.  The heat race started with Cooter on the pole followed by new comer Steve Erickson and Kyle Jusits.  Jusits jumped to second on the start and the three cars maintained the order to the finish.  Cooter had the pole position for the feature and never gave it up.  Erickson spun his Bandolero on lap two but fought his way back and battled Jusits hard until Jusits spun with three laps to go.  Cooter took the win followed by Erickson and Jusits.

The Thunder Roadsters took to the track with new comer Dave Cooter, Michael’s father, joining the gang from last week.  The heat race would start with last weeks winner Davey Cox on the pole followed by Mike Piecko, Cooter and Eddie Mecum.  Piecko jumped to the lead on the opening lap and held off the others for the win.  Piecko was followed to the line by Cox, Mecum and Cooter.  Lap one of the feature race had Cox in the front followed by Mecum, Piecko and Cooter.  On lap four Piecko ended up cutting through the infield after trying to take second and instead fell to fourth. That allowed Cooter to move up to third and then second when Mecum’s roadster lost power on the back straight. But, a lap later, Piecko would make a bold pass in turn four and take second back from Cooter.  Cox took the checkers with Piecko in second, Cooter in third and Mecum in fourth.

Once again, the biggest battles were saved for the Legends.  The heat race started with Don Schaal on the pole but Curt Gnatzig would take the lead in turn one of the first lap jumping up from the third position.  By the second lap Ryan Miles moved up to the second spot followed by Kyle LaPier, Schaal and his son Ernie Schaal.  The caution came out for a spins involving the cars of Don Schaal, LaPier and Miles.  The restart had Gnatzig in the lead followed by Ernie Schaal, Michael Bilderback, Dick Kaiser, and Miles.  On the following lap a battle for the lead would leave Gnatzig spinning to the back of the pack in turn one.  In the meantime Ernie Schaal jumped ahead of the field and led the rest of the race for the win.  Miles and Gantzig battled back to finish second and third followed by Kaiser and Bilderback.

The feature race showed that all of the excitement was not used up in the heat race.  Ryan Miles started on the pole but Curt Gnatzig jumped to the lead on the first lap and then did his best to run away from the field.  Ernie Schaal grabbed second and got close to Gnatzig a few times but just couldn’t get in position to take the lead.  Third position seemed to be the most desired spot as Miles and LaPier battled with LaPier making a pass in turn three while locking up the brakes and getting the crowd on their feet.  Bilderback made his way through the field moving up to fourth passing Miles with three to go and then making a final turn pass for third getting by LaPier.  Gnatzig took the feature win followed by Ernie Schaal, Bilderback, LaPier, and Miles.

The Milwaukee Summer Shootout will take a week of and then return to the Milwaukee Mile on June 29th for round three.
