Sargent Flies To First Rockford Feature Win
By: Kevin Ramsell

Saturday, May 05, 2007 (Loves Park, IL) - Tim Sargent and Bob Kahler put on a classic short track late model feature battle.  At the end it was Sargent visiting victory lane on USG Night.  Fred Nason, Alex Papini and Johnny Zelinga also took home feature wins.

Sargent started on the pole for the 30-lap Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Model feature event.  Kahler moved from his third starting position to take over the second spot from John Baumeister Jr. on lap 3.  Kahler then set his sights on Sargent.

Kahler moved to the inside of Sargent on lap 5 to challenge for the top spot.  The two put on a great side-by-side battle throughout the event.

The caution flew on lap 19 when Ryan Carlson hit the wall in turns one and two.  On the re-start, Sargent was able to get some breathing room from Kahler.  But Kahler was able to catch back up to Sargent.

On the final lap, Baumeister and Jerry Gille made contact going into turn one causing both to spin.  Sargent would drive back to the checkered flag for the win with Kahler in second.

Ricky Bilderback would come third with John Reynolds Jr. and Bill Hobson rounding out the top five.

"It was a wild ride, but we hanged on," Sargent said in victory lane.

Nason held off a hard challenge from Doug Bennett to capture the NASCAR All-American Sportsman feature.

Rick Nielsen grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap feature event.  Nason, who started fourth, moved up to second and was challenging Nielsen for the top spot on lap 4.  A lap later, Nason would get past Nielsen heading down the backstretch.

Nason wouldn't have an easy drive to the checkers as fast qualifier, Doug Bennett, moved from his sixth starting position to challenge Nason for the top spot.

Bennett would try countless times over the final seven laps to get past Nason, but couldn’t get a grip on the inside to complete the pass.  He gave it one last effort coming off of turn four while coming to the checkers.  At the line it was Nason picking up the win over Bennett.

Brock Behnke finished third with Nielsen and Darrell Garman rounding out the top five.

Sparkman completed his comeback from an injury at the end of the last season to win the Budweiser American Short Tracker feature.

Sparkman started on the outside of the front row and took the early lead in the 25-lap feature event.

The event went caution free until lap 17 when Kenny Marcellis spun in turn two.  On the re-start, Steve Allman made hard contact with the front stretch wall to bring out another caution.

Matt Berger took advantage of the double file re-start to challenge Sparkman near the end.  But, the former champion was able to bring it home for his first feature win of the season.

Berger held on to second with Tim Melvin finishing third.  Kelly Evink and Aaron Rude rounded out the top five.

Papini was able to break away from the rest of the pack to pick up his first Coca-Cola RoadRunner feature win of the season.

It took two attempts to get the feature underway.  After the field took the initial green flag, Mike Leopold and Care Nielsen both made hard contact with the front stretch wall to bring out the caution.

The field took the second green flag with Jason Van Hise grabbing the early lead.

Papini moved from his sixth starting position to Van Hise's back bumper by lap 4.  Papini went on the inside Van Hise to take over the top spot on lap 5.  He would begin to pull away from the rest of the pack.

Behind him, it was a great four car battle for second.  At the checkers, it was Papini with the win with Charlie Frisch leading the four car pack for second.  Van Hise finished third with Kris Nilson in fourth.  John Logan Jr. would round out the top five.

Zelinga led wire to wire to win the FIRA feature event.

Zelinga started on the pole and jumped out to the early lead.  Grant Greenfield quickly moved from his fourth starting position to second by lap two.

Greenfield would make a few attempts to get by Zelinga on the inside, but Zelinga would use the momentum on the outside to hold him off for the win.

Tim Roach would come home third with Jim Bass and Gary Cooper rounding out the top five.

Earlier in the evening, Vern Brown had a wild roll over when he and Lyle Phillips made contact in the heat race.   Brown was able to walk away but was done in evening.

Vaughn Gerke held off Lon Meagher to win the 15-lap Classic Stock Car race.  Gerke was driving a 1957 Chevy while Meagher piloted a 1965 Chevy Impala, a Smokey Yunick replica.

The evening was capped off with a car crushing performance from the Devastator Monster Truck.
