Watters Wins The Challenge, Bilderback Sets Fast Time At The Spring Classic
By: Kevin Ramsell
Saturday, April 14, 2007 (Loves Park, IL) – 17-year-old Kyle Watters put his
name in the history books as he captured the first ever Crap Scrappers Hornet
vs. Bandit Challenge at the Rockford Speedway. The event was part of the
30th Annual Spring Classic Weekend.
A field of 28 cars took the green flag in the 25-lap feature event.
Polesitter Shane Hildreth took the early lead.
Watters started 7th and easily worked his way to the front as he patiently
worked his way up to second by lap 9.
The only caution flew on lap 9 when Ryan Hoffman made contact with the turn
four wall.
On the re-start, Watters worked would challenge Hildreth for the lead.
Watters went on the inside of Hildreth as they went into turn one on lap
10. A lap later, Watters would take over the top spot.
Tim Dickson and Roger Schultz put on a great battle for second in the latter
stages of the event. With six laps to go, Dickson got past Schultz and
quickly worked his way up to challenge Watters.
Watters would go on to hold off Dickson at the finish line to win the
event. Schultz would finish third with Hildreth taking home
fourth. Steve McBride would round out the top five.
“I was hoping that he wouldn’t get close to me and take me out, but he
raced me clean,” Watters stated in victory lane. “It was exciting to
win this race.”
Jim Kunis, Vinny Mangiaracina, Kyle Watters and Roger Schultz picked up heat
wins.
Dickson had a fast time of 17.105 seconds. Schultz was second with a
time of 17.134 seconds and Watters was third with a time of 17.193 seconds.
