Grand Nationals Have A New Name At Rockford
By: Kevin Ramsell
April 10, 2007 (Loves Park, IL) – One of the more popular divisions at the
Rockford Speedway will go undergo a small facelift as it prepares for this
season. The “Grand National” division will now be called the “NASCAR
All-American Sportsman” division. Along with the change of names, its rules
have been opened up to help make this one of the more unique divisions
competing during the Speedway’s 60th season of racing.
New for 2007, Modified racecars will be allowed to compete in the NASCAR
All-American Sportsman division, utilizing the nationally renowned IMCA
Northern SportMod rule package with minor weight adjustments. In addition, the
Grand National rules as they have been in the past have been rewritten to fall
in-line with the more popular Area Sportsman rules that are followed at many
area tracks as well as year end specials throughout the region.
“This type of combination has provided excellent racing each year at our
Bahama Bracket Nationals,” stated Rockford Speedway General Manager Gregg
McKarns. “We wanted to capture that excitement in this division throughout
the season and we have all been working hard to reach that goal.” To date
four modifieds have been registered for this class, some with new drivers and
some with veterans returning for another chance at glory at the famed quarter
mile high banked paved facility. “The phones have been ringing and there is
a new found interest from both fans and drivers regarding this division, it
may take some time but we are anxious to see the end result,” concluded
McKarns.
The NASCAR All-American Sportsman division will make their 2007 debut on
Saturday, April 21 as part of the 60th Annual Coca-Cola Season Opener for the
NASCAR All-American Series. The Stanley Steemer NASCAR Late Models, Budweiser
American Short Trackers, and the Coca-Cola RoadRunners will also be in action.
Fans that bring an empty 20 oz. Coca-Cola bottle will receive $2.00 off their
admission on Saturday, April 21st.
