WCS To Make Two Visits To Rockford In 2007
By: Kevin Ramsell

Wednesday, February 21, 2007 (Loves Park, IL) – The Wisconsin Challenge Series 2007 season will begin and end just south of the Wisconsin border.  The popular super late model series will headline two of the Rockford Speedway’s big racing events during its 60th anniversary season.

The WCS will start its 2007 campaign as the headline division at the 30th Annual Spring Classic weekend on April 14-15th.  They will then return to the high-banked quarter-mile oval during the 42nd Annual National Short Track Championships presented by Chicago International Trucks and crown its 2007 Series Champion.

Last year, the WCS made their first visit to the historic oval, located north of Rockford, Illinois in Loves Park.  A total of 43 cars took qualifying times.  In the end, it was Cherry Valley’s very own Steve Rubeck holding off 2006 WCS champion Nate Haseleu for the win.

“Everyone was nervous at first,” WCS Series Director Jeff Sachse recalled.  “For many teams, racing at Rockford Speedway was uncharted territory for them.  They knew it was a fast, challenging and unforgiving racetrack, and even those who raced there before, it had been many years since they last competed at the speedway.  However, after holding the event, the vast majority of the drivers really enjoyed trying the new venue on the WCS schedule and many are enjoying its return to the 2007 schedule.”

The WCS will have its qualifying and preliminary races on Saturday, April 14th.  The Mid-American Series will also have a 75-lap feature race that night along with a Hornet vs. Bandit Challenge on the quarter-mile oval.

On Sunday, April 15th, the WCS will headline the afternoon of racing with a 150-lap main event.  The Big 8 Series will also be in action that day with their feature event along with a Racing Collectibles and Model Car expo.

The WCS will then return to Rockford to be part of the 42nd Annual National Short Track Championships presented by Chicago International Trucks on September 28-30th.  Their 2007 season championship will be decided at this event.

“It’s a win/win deal for both parties,” Sachse stated.  “For the series, it will have the feel of a championship weekend which is what the Rockford Speedway is anticipating.  The National Short Track Championships have a lot of tradition and lore in the racing community, and to be a part of it is an honor for the series.  Given the competitive nature of the series, fans will not walk away disappointed with the on track action when the final checkered flag falls during the 2007 NSTC weekend.”

Rockford Speedway General Manager, Gregg McKarns, is excited to have the WCS back at Rockford.  “I agree with Jeff, this is a win/win,” McKarns stated.  “Last year, we were impressed with their professionalism, car count, and the great race they had.  It was a classic short track super late model race with some of the best drivers competing in it.  To have this during our 60th Anniversary season and during two of our biggest racing events, it was a good fit for everyone.”

The full 2007 season schedule is now available at the track’s website at www.rockfordspeedway.com.   If you are interested in having a group outing, birthday party or company event at the Rockford Speedway in 2007, please call the track office at (815) 633-1500 for more information.
