Nason & McCoy Take Home NSTC Wins
By: Kevin Ramsell
Saturday, September 23, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – The second day of the 41st
Annual Chicago International Trucks National Short Track Championships could
be summed up in one word, weather. While dodging rain showers, NSTC
Championships were handed out to Fred Nason and Brett McCoy.
Jon Reynolds Jr. and Dan Linnehan had a wild battle for the lead in the last
lap of the Grand National feature event.
Randy Steinhoff grabbed the early lead in the Budweiser 41-lap feature event
for the Grand National division. Linnehan quickly moved from his sixth
starting spot to take over the lead on lap 4.
Linnehan had a good handle on the lead throughout most of the event.
Reynolds started 11th and patiently worked his way to the front. With 9
laps to go, Reynolds got took over second from Doug Bennett and quickly chased
down Linnehan.
On the last lap, Reynolds got on the inside of Linnehan going into turn
one. As the two come off of turn two, Linnehan appeared to get loose
coming off heading down the backstretch. The two made contact and
Linnehan went spinning through the infield to turn three where he hit the wall
then was collected by Brandon Eash.
Reynolds went on to take the checkered flag with Fred Nason in second.
Bennett would come home third with Rick Nielsen and Brock Behnke rounding out
the top five.
Reynolds Jr. failed to pass post race inspection and was disqualified, thus
handing the win over to Nason.
McCoy took home his third NSTC American Short Tracker championship.
Tim Melvin took the early lead in the Classic Limousine 41-lap feature event.
McCoy started eleventh and George Sparkman started 13th. They both
patiently worked their way to the front.
At the halfway mark of the event, Bruce Tucker tried to get on the inside of
Melvin for the lead, but Melvin was able to hold on. Three laps later,
McCoy got around Tucker for third with Sparkman in tow. A lap later,
McCoy got on the inside of Melvin and took over the top spot on lap 25.
Two laps later, Sparkman got on the inside of McCoy to challenge for the top
spot. The two put on a great clean side-by-side battle for the
lead. With five laps to go, Sparkman got loose coming out of turn
four. This gave McCoy some breathing room. Sparkman spent the last
four laps chasing down McCoy but came up short at the checkered flag.
Randy Samples came home third with Melvin in fourth. Brent Nottestad
rounded out the top five.
Jeremy Lepak was the last car to qualify in the CRA Super Series after
repairing a broken fuel pump in practice. He was not in his qualifying
spot and only got one lap. He set a new track record with a time of
12.961 seconds (69.439 mph). He will start no better than 11th because
part of the penalty also includes not being involved in the invert.
Jerry Gille set the fast time in the Big 8 Series with a time of 13.788
seconds (65.274 mph).
The Big 8 Series started their first 75-lap feature event but got interrupted
by rain. Rockford Speedway officials decided to call the events for the
evening and will continue tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
