Nason Holds Off Riedner For His First NSTC Win
By: Kevin Ramsell

Friday, September 22, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – It was an exciting first night of racing at the 41st Annual Chicago International Trucks National Short Track Championships at the Rockford Speedway.  Fred Nason, Billy Robinson, Wanda Dobbs and Roger Schultz all took home NSTC Championship wins.

Nason collects his first ever NSTC Championship in the Area Sportsman division.

Doug Bennett grabbed the early lead in the Goodyear 50-lap feature event.  On lap 4, Scott Lawver got on the outside of Bennett to take over the top spot.  Lawver held on to the lead while holding off multiple challenges from Scott “Chico” Riedner.

The caution flew on lap 22 when Eaan Carson lost his right front tire going into turns one and two.  Jeremy Wolff, James Kruschke III, and Dan Linnehan were also collected.

Lawver and Riedner continued to battle for the lead while Nason joined the two.  On lap 30, Nason got past Riedner for second and set his sights on Lawver.  Two laps later, Nason got on the inside of Lawver to take over the top spot.  Riedner got past Lawver on lap 33 to take over second.

With 11 laps to go, Rick Nielsen made hard contact with the turn one wall to bring out the final caution.

Nason spent the final ten laps holding off multiple challenges from Riedner to take home the feature win.  Linnehan recovered to finish third.  Brock Behnke and Bryan Turtle rounded out the top five.

Robinson took home the RoadRunner NSTC Championship.

Jason Van Hise grabbed the early lead in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 41-lap feature event.  He would lead the first 28 laps while Robinson, who started near the back, would march his way to the lead on lap 29.

Van Hise would get collected in a frontstretch crash with Charlie Frisch with 8 laps to go.  Robinson would pull away from Pat Smith to win the feature event.  Tom Flippo Jr. finished third with Corey Teran and David Lignell rounding out the top five.

Dobbs defended her 2005 NSTC Winged Women on Wheels Championship by taking home the 2006 edition.

Linnea Weerda grabbed the early lead in the 25-lap feature event.  She held on to the lead until Amy Flippo got on the inside of Weerda and the two ran side-by-side until Flippo pulled away on lap 5.

Flippo held on to the lead while Dobbs worked her way from her fifth starting position to third by lap 10.  A lap later she moved into second and set her sights on Flippo.

With 10 laps to go, Dobbs got on the inside of Flippo to challenge for the lead.  A lap later, Dobbs took over the top spot.  Dobbs held on to the lead until Flippo came back and made a last chance effort coming off of turn four.  At the line, it was Dobbs with the win by a half a car length over Flippo.

Flippo’s second place finish gave her the 2006 WWOW Championship at the Rockford Speedway.

Schultz won the State Line Staffing 25-lap Hornet feature event.

Mark Bielefeldt took the early lead in the huge Hornet Swarm.  Randy Reynolds got on the inside of Bielefeldt on lap 3 to take over the top spot.  Two laps later, Schultz moved up to third.  Then it took him another two laps to take over second.  On lap 10, Schultz got on the inside Reynolds where the two battled side-by-side for two laps.

Schultz would take command of the race on lap 12 and go on to win.  Nick Lasher would come home second with Reynolds in third.

Schultz also captured the 2006 Hornet Championship and Hornet Challenge Championship for the Rockford Speedway.
