Scott Lawver... "Huge Weekend, I Love It"
By: Kevin Ramsell
Wednesday, September 13, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – When you walk up to Scott
Lawver and ask him about the National Short Track Championships, his face
lights up and he starts talking. The Roscoe, IL native is easily an NSTC
veteran.
“Huge…huge weekend I love it,” Lawver recently stated when asked about
the 41st Annual Chicago International Trucks National Short Track
Championships taking place at the Rockford Speedway on September 22-24.
“I have been to every single one, well except when I lived out in
Colorado,” Lawver stated. “I missed three of them. I was at
the first one when Dick Trickle won it and they used to have a best car
competition and they would give the winner a black and white television right
there on the track. I will never forget it.”
Lawver isn’t only a fan but also is a competitor, “I won it in 1994 in a
RoadRunner, then in 1995 and for like seven years in a row, I took second in a
Sportsman,” Lawver recalled. “I finally won it in 2003.” He
will be competing in the Area Sportsman division that will be competing on
Friday night and most likely in the Grand National division on Saturday night
of the three day racing event.
“It’s a hard one to win, it ain’t a gimme,” Lawver states about
competing at NSTC. “No matter if you are a track champion or not or
know the track, a lot of stuff happens on that track. It’s so tight
and so fast, even with all of the experienced drivers out there.”
When asked if he enjoys NSTC as a fan or a driver, Lawver had an honest
answer. “I tell you what, I’m 50/50. When Joe Shear was still
alive, I loved watching him race.” Lawver remembered. “I would
go down there on Thursday and Friday and do my thing and then help him out on
Saturday and Sunday. To me, that was a dream comes true feeling.”
For Lawver, the NSTC and Joe Shear was a perfect match. Shear, an eight
time champion, passed away a few months after capturing the title in
1997. “Biggest memory was Joe winning his last one in 1997,” Lawver
recalled. “That was unreal because I know the story behind Joe, which
I won’t get into. But, he did a lot to get the strength to go out
there and win that one. That is a movie in itself right there. It
was unbelievable what he did that day.”
Tickets are on sale now at the track box office by calling (815) 633-1500 or
visiting the track’s website at www.rockfordspeedway.com.
