It Was A Groovin Night At The Rockford Speedway
By: Kevin Ramsell

Wednesday, July 26, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – The Rockford Speedway turned into a discotheque as it celebrated 70’s Night.  Becky Proehl, Vinny Mangiaracina, Kyle Jusits, Michael Bilderback took home feature wins.

Elizabeth Weigelt took the early lead in the first 15-lap feature for the Winged Women on Wheels division.  Weigelt held on to the lead until Linnea Weerda took over the top spot on lap 3.  The caution flew on lap 9 when Amanda Maxwell spun coming out of turn four.  On the re-start, Tammy Hawkins got by Weerda on the inside to take over the top spot with nine laps to go.  Becky Proehl would take over the second spot with Alicia Magee in third.  At the finish it was Hawkins with the win.

Sabrina Castillo grabbed the lead in the start of the second feature event.  The caution flew on lap 4 when Magee and Amy Flippo got together going into turn one and both heading to the outside wall.  Magee’s car would have a small fire but she would be able to walk away.  Castillo spent the final 11 laps holding off Proehl.  At the checkers, it was Castillo with the win over Proehl.  Flippo would come back to finish third.  Hawkins came home fourth with Weigelt in fifth

Proehl’s two second place finish would give her the overall win.

Mangiaracina took home the 13-lap Hornet Swarm.  Harvey Foster was the early leader and had to fight off Mangiaracina.  On lap 7, Mangiaracina would take advantage of a re-start and take over the top spot from Foster.  He would pull away from Foster to the checkered flag.  Nick Lasher would sneak by Foster at the stripe for second.  Ben Montemayor and Roger Schultz would round out the top five.

Jusits won the 12-lap Bandolero feature.  Tyler Blume was the early leader until the caution flew on lap 9 when Dwight Dunlap spun in turn four.  On the re-start, second place runner, Alex Arelano, jumped the start over Blume and he was penalized two positions.  Jusits would get by Blume with two laps to go to take home the win.

Bilderback took advantage of the lap traffic to take home the 15-lap Legend feature.

Ryan Miles had the lead until two laps to go when he came upon lap traffic.  Miles went low to try to get by the lap traffic.  This allowed Kyle Lapier to get by Miles on the outside for the lead in turns one and two.  But as they went into turns three and four, Lapier got stuck with lap traffic and this allowed Bilderback to sneak by.  Bilderback would grab the win with Lapier holding on to second.  Miles would come home third.

Steve Hillary took home the Figure 8 feature win.  A scary wreck happened lap 3 when Robert Stoltz and Chris Gantz just past the “X”.  Both drivers were able to walk away. Pat Smith came home second.

Ben Montemayor took home the first ever Disco Ball Race.  He held off Roger Schultz in a photo finish.

Alan Bekielewski of Roscoe, IL beat out five other competitors to win the Smokey Burnout Competition.  Heath Chambers of Belvidere won the Hot Dog Eating contest.
