Hobson Captures First Feature Win At Rockford
By: Kevin Ramsell
Saturday, June 24, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – It was a memorable night for Bill
Hobson as he captured his first feature win. Matt Berger, Pat Smith and
Vern Brown also captured feature wins on Northwest Bank Kid’s Night at the
Rockford Speedway.
Hobson held off Ricky Bilderback to win his first ever NASCAR Late Model
feature win.
Hobson grabbed the early lead at the start of the 30-lap feature event.
Bilderback started fifth and moved his way to the front. On lap 25,
Hobson got loose in turns one and two and Bilderback went by on the
inside. On the same lap, Brett McCoy and Josh Nelms got together in
turns three and four to bring out the caution. The lineup went back to
the last completed lap putting Hobson back in the lead.
Hobson would go on to hold off Bilderback for his first ever win. Jerry
Gille would finish third with Bob Kahler and Jeremy Miller rounding out the
top five.
“I got loose in turns one and two trying to hold off a great driver,”
Hobson stated in victory lane. “He is one of those guys that will
intimidate you.”
Berger captured his third feature win in a row for the Budweiser American
Short Tracker division.
Steve Allman took the early lead in the 25-lap feature event. Jason
Bragg moved from his fifth starting spot to the lead on lap 13. A lap
later, Bragg came out of turn two and spun out. This handed the lead
over to Berger. Berger, who started 13th, held off Aaron Rude for the
win. Justin Scott came home third. George Sparkman had a wild
night. He spun twice but came through to finish fourth. Randy
Samples rounded out the top five.
Smith had a great night in the Coca-Cola RoadRunner division. Not only
did he win the RoadRunner Challenge, but he also captured the feature win as
well.
John Logan Jr. took the early lead in the wild 20-lap event. Logan had a
huge lead until the caution flew on lap 15 when Jerry Mesch got loose coming
off on turn two and collected Josh Lundy.
Smith, who started eleventh, got on the inside of Logan with four laps to
go. At the finish, it was Smith with the win. Dan Carlson came
through to finish second with Gene Marocco in third. Kris Nilson came
home fourth with Raymond Hardesty rounding out the top five.
Brown held off Neal Gillentine to win the 20-lap FIRA feature race.
Grant Greenfield grabbed the early lead and held on to it until lap 3 when
Zellinga took over the top spot. Brown started fifth and challenged
Gillentine for the lead on lap 8. Brown dove to the inside of Gillentine
for the lead going into turn one and didn’t give up the spot.
The only caution came on lap 17 when Tim Roach hit the wall hard in turns one
and two. He was able to walk away. At the finish, Gillentine made
one last attempt but Brown was able to hold him off by half a car length at
the line.
