Smith, Dobbs, Schultz And Gantz Win At Rockford
by: Kevin Ramsell

Wednesday, June 14, 2006 (Loves Park, IL) – Pat Smith, Wanda Dobbs, Roger Schultz and Chris Gantz picked up feature wins at the Rockford Speedway.  It was the first Wednesday night of action sponsored by AT&T Yellow Pages Published by R.H. Donnelly Chamber Night at the Races.

Rick Nielsen appeared to have an easy victory in the Coca-Cola RoadRunner feature event.  Nielsen and Lloyd Hawkins led the 25-car field to the green flag of the 20-lap feature event.  The two ran side-by-side for the first three laps until Nielsen checked out from the rest of the field.

Papini started eleventh and worked his way to the front following points leader Dan Carlson and Pat Smith.  Nielsen appeared to be on his way to an easy victory until the caution flew with three laps to go when Steve Talley blew his engine going down the backstretch.  This allowed Smith and Papini to line up behind Nielsen on the re-start.

Smith slipped on the re-start allowing Papini to get the whole shot on Nielsen.  As the white flag flew, Chris Gantz spun in turn two and spun his tires to keep going.  This caused a huge flume of smoke.  As the leaders came into turn two, Nielsen lifted and Papini got the lead and took the checkered flag.

“I went into turn two and saw a flume of smoke, Nielsen lifted and I hit the gas and got by him on the inside,” stated Papini who pulled off a clean sweep by also capturing the dash and his heat race.  Smith came home third with Carlson in fourth.  Jason Van Hise rounded out the top five.

Both Papini and Nielsen failed post race inspection and were disqualified.  This handed the win over to Pat Smith.

Dobbs captured the first of two Winged Women on Wheels feature event.  Dobbs grabbed the lead at the start and didn’t look back.  The only caution flew on lap 4 when Elizabeth Weigelt spun in turn two and collected Sabrina Castillo.  Both were able to continue.  Amy Flippo came home second with Alisha Magee in third.

Linnea Weerda took the early lead in the second WWOW feature.  Tammy Hawkins started third and got on the inside of Weerda and took over the top spot.  Dobbs started ninth and challenged Hawkins for the lead.  But, Hawkins was able to hold off Dobbs for the win.

Dobbs claimed the overall win with her first and second place finishes.

Roger Schultz was in the best position for the 13-lap Hornet Swarm, he was out front.  Schultz grabbed the lead as the green flag flew and survived a wild melee on the back stretch to the win.

Chris Gantz took the lead halfway through the Figure 8 race over Roger Stoltz to take home the win.  Pat Smith got past Stoltz on the last lap to finish second.

The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series returns this Saturday night as Craftsman presents a Father’s Day Special.  The NASCAR Late Models, Grand Nationals, Coca-Cola RoadRunners, Legends and Allison Legacy will be in action along with a Daring Dad’s Competition.
