American Le Mans Series Returns to Road America
(Elkhart Lake, WI, August 9, 2006) The Generac 500 at Road America, August
17-20, 2006, will feature the American Le Mans Series and four support races:
Speed World Challenge, Star Mazda, IMSA GT3, and IMSA Lites.
Headquartered in Waukesha, event sponsor Generac Power Systems designs and
manufactures top quality, long-life power generation equipment.
The American Le Mans Series challenges its racers with an energizing 2 hour,
45 minute sprint battle with four different classes of cars racing at the same
time: LMP1, LMP2, GT1 and GT2. This event will challenge Audi’s
four-for-four LMP1 wins, while LMP2 drivers Liz Halliday and Clint Field try
to hold onto their class lead. Corvette Racing (GT1) is being chased by Aston
Martin Racing, while GT2 has had five different winners in the last six
races.
After a one-year hiatus, SCCA Pro Racing’s SPEED World Challenge GT and
Touring Car Championships return to Road America. Divided into two separate
races (SPEED GT and SPEED Touring Car), the SCCA SPEED World Challenge
Championships run over 18 different automotive brands.
The Star Mazda series and the IMSA series are designed to develop racing
talent. Star Mazda’s goal is to provide an opportunity for the maximum
number of drivers to compete “on a level playing field” on the same race
tracks that are used for major league events, at the lowest possible cost. The
IMSA GT3 Series is an opportunity for amateur and semi-professional Porsche
drivers to compete in a professional environment. IMSA Lites will feature
three classes of open-top sports racer prototypes and is considered a step up
for a racer who wants to advance beyond traditional club racing or to prepare
for a career in a world-class series such the ALMS.
Other great fan attractions include touring sessions, the Klein Tools Air Show
and Pit Stop Challenge, autograph sessions, drifting demonstrations, and the
NAST (National Association of Show Trucks) Show Truck Glow. As always, fans
can enjoy helicopter rides, the Family Fun Zone, fantastic views, and the best
food on the racing circuit.
The Tour de Road America returns for its third year to raise funds for the
Lance Armstrong Foundation. On Saturday evening, pre-registered participants
can bike around the track with other fans, racers and celebrities. Details are
posted online at www.pelotonride.org.
The Race to Feed the Hungry Salvation Army food drive asks fans to donate $7
in non-perishable food items. In exchange they will receive free Thursday
admission or $10 off their Generac 500 ticket. Admission is $10 Thursday, $20
Friday, $45 Saturday and $45 Sunday. Children 12 and under are admitted free
with a paying adult. Races run rain or shine. For more information, go to www.roadamerica.com
or call 800/365-7223.
