Vintage Cars Return To Road America For Festival

Elkhart Lake, Wis., September 12, 2005––Road America will host Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association’s (VSCDA) Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival, September 16-18, 2005. Along with Bugatti, the featured marque, the event will celebrate 50 years of Elva.

Ettore Bugatti designed and produced one of the most highly regarded luxury cars and successful racing cars for its era. Over 40 examples of this rare car will be in Elkhart Lake for a week of road rallys, excursions, and racing at Road America. The 1927 Grand Prix Bugatti Special, originally raced and owned by Helle Nice, the famous Grand Prix racer of the 1920s and 30s will be at the track. Many Bugatti activities will be held throughout the weekend including the Bugatti Grand Prix race on Sunday.

The Elva 50th Anniversary Reunion celebrates the contributions Frank G. Nichols who built nearly one thousand racing, sports racing and road cars powered by a range of motors from Climax to Porsche to McLaren.

The name Elva is derived from the French phrase “elle va” which means “she goes.” Elva sports racers and formula cars were very competitive in club racing events in the United States. Later the road-going Elva Courier was produced and was a hit among sports car enthusiasts in the U.S. Elva owners and fans from across the country will gather this weekend to participate in activities including the All-Elva Feature Race on Sunday.

The Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association is a Midwest based not-for-profit organization of 800 members. It holds wheel-to-wheel competition race weekends at major tracks in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Participants are afforded ample opportunity for track time and friendly competition via practice and qualifying sessions, sprint races, handicap runs and enduros. VSCDA believes that vintage cars should be driven and their goal is to offer safe, friendly competition with on and off-track camaraderie.

The VSCDA contributes about ten thousand dollars every year to charity. More than a third of those funds are the result of the charitable activities held during the Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival and other Road America events. Local charities who have received VSCDA contributions include the Family Resource Center, the Elkhart Lake First Responders, and the Elkhart Lake Police Department.

Road America celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. The first race weekend, the SCCA Sports Car Classic, was held at the track September 10-11, 1955. Tickets are $10 on Friday, $15 on Saturday, $15 on Sunday, or $30 for a 3-day weekend pass. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paying adult. Races run rain or shine. Gate 1 opens at 7am each day. For more information go to www.roadamerica.com or call 800/365-7223.
