Andretti, Hill To Appear At Road America
Elkhart Lake, Wisc., July 7, 2005—World Champion, multiple Driver of the
Year, racing patriarch and racing ambassador Mario Andretti will be honored as
the grand marshal during Road America's Brian Redman International Challenge (BRIC)
Presented by Jaguar, July 14-17.
Also attending the event as special guest is Phil Hill whose driving career
spans two decades of countless wins in a wide range of sports and formula
cars. In 1961 Hill became the first American to win the Formula One World
Drivers Championship, the ultimate competition in all of motorsports. For 17
years his record was unchallenged and today is shared with only one other
American, Mario Andretti, who won in 1978. Hill remains the only American-born
Formula One champion.
Andretti is often called the greatest race car driver of all time, with
stellar accomplishments in many racing disciplines. To date, he is the
only driver to be named Driver of the Year in three decades—in 1967, 1978
and 1984. He won the Formula One World Championship in 1978. He is
a four-time Champ Car National Champion, in 1965, 1966, 1969 and 1984. In
Champ Cars, Andretti won at Road America in 1983, 1984 and 1987. He was the
Indy 500 winner in 1969 and pole winner in 1966, 1967 and 1987. Andretti
collected important podium honors in Florida, winning NASCAR's Daytona 500 in
1967; and the 12 Hours of Sebring three times, 1967, 1970 and 1972, in sports
cars.
