Wheeler Wins Third Midwest Modified Feature At Proctor Speedway
Ogston Wins First Pure Stock Main
by Jerry O'Brien
July 25, 2004
Dan Wheeler expanded his Midwest Modified point lead by winning his third
feature of the season. Harry Hanson topped the WISSOTA Late Model feature
while Darrell Nelson annexed the WISSOTA Modified feature. Dave Mass was the
winner of the WISSOTA Super Stock feature. 15 year old Joey Ogston won his
first ever career Pure Stock main event.
Harry Hanson shot to the lead from inside second row starting slot to grab the
early lead in the 20 lap WISSOTA Late Model feature with pole sitter John
Massingill, Steve Laursen, Darrell Nelson and Tim McMann trailing. Mike Meger
was on the prowl from the back of the bus and was up to eighth when Kevin
Mudrak brought out the first of four caution flags with a spin in turn two. At
the green flag Nelson got the jump on Massingill and took second with Kevin
Carlson briefly ahead of Laursen in fifth. Laursen, Steve Roseen and Carlson
battled for fifth but the caution flag appeared for a Jeff Massingill spin in
turn three. Hanson held the lead over Nelson at the green flag with John
Massingill back up to third as Laursen attempted to make the high groove work
with limited success. Jeff Broking slid over the top of turn three bringing
out caution flag number three. At the restart the high side began to come in a
bit and Laursen sniped at Massingill for third. The final caution was another
Kevin Mudrak loop this time in the fourth turn. At the restart Hanson and
Nelson pulled away with Hanson taking the win. Nelson was second as Laursen
grabbed third over John Massingill with Tim McMann securing the fifth spot.
Dave Mass jumped out to the led from the second row and ran away from the
Super Stock field to take the win in an event that had only one caution flag
for a Keith Kern spin just past half way. Mass had a commanding lead over Rick
Rivord, pole sitter Eric Nelson, Ryan Aho and Jay Kuras. At the half way point
Scott Lawrence slipped past Nelson to take fifth. The caution flag closed up
the field to Mass' bumper but to no avail as he took a dominating win over
Rivord, Aho, Kuras and Lawrence.
Darrell Nelson was the winner of the WISSOTA Modified feature overtook early
leader Danny Pierce in the late stages of the event after starting in the
third row. At the green flag it was outside pole starter Don Copp over Pierce
with Jodi Olson and Clint Larson in the mix after a slowdown on the first lap
when Tom Turcotte was spun into the infield. At the restart Copp led Pierce
and it appeared the high groove began to work as Copp and Larson moved to the
top and Pierce and Olson ran the bottom. Jeff Wood, Al Uotinen and Darrell
Nelson battled for fifth. Copp and Larson got away from the pack but a caution
flag flew when one of the inside marker tires was jerked free onto the track.
Pierce again shot into the lead but several cars were turned around in the
first turn with Jeff Wood sent to the rear. Another lap was not completed
after the green flag when Dave Mass spun in turn three. The single file
restart was what Nelson needed as he quickly moved to the inside to challenge
Copp and Pierce taking the lead. Nelson moved away to a big lead as it was
three wide for second on the final circuit. Pierce, Larson, Copp and Uotinen
finished in the top five.
Dan Wheeler worked his way forward from the inside of the third row to take
his third win of the season in the Midwest Modifieds. Ken Thompson had the
early lead from the pole but Gerg carlson and Mark Anderson were snapping at
his heels. Shawn Van Gilder brought out he first of three caution flags with a
spin in turn one. At the green flag Thompson led Mark Anderson and Wheeler but
Anderson slipped past to take the point with Wheeler to second. They pulled
away from the pack but another spin by Van Gilder closed up the gap. At the
restart it became four way battle as Kelly Checkalski and Nick Lavato joined
in. After the final caution flag for a Brock McCarthy spin, Wheeler got by
Anderson for the win as Lavato also got by pushing back Anderson to third.
Greg Chesley took advantage of a Checkalski slip to finish fourth with
Checkalski fifth.
15 year old Joey Ogston pulled off his first career feature win beating Tom
Cornelison, Jr to the line in an exciting feature run. After a stack up in the
first turn at the start the event went the rest of the way to the checkered
flag. Ogstad started in the tenth starting spot and and worked his way forward
to take the lead and the win. Willy Thompson led in the early going trying to
get back to victory lane, a place he visited on opening night, but it was not
to be as he slipped off turn two and lost the lead to Ogston. Jim McClellan
who had to be extracted from the infield hole in turn one with a wrecker in
the first lap incident, worked his way forward to finish third ahead of
Thompson and Scott Larsen.
