Seivert Takes Plymouth Late Model Opener
(Plymouth) Nothing could stop the season opener for Plymouth Dirt Track Racing
at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds this past Saturday, even with a chance of
rain in the forecast.
There was a total of 109 cars for the opener in the four divisions of regular
season racing at Plymouth, and under the rotation system of featured races the
Grand National division was first to hit the newly widened track.
Jeremy Sauter (Random Lake) pulled out ahead of the first heat and picked up
the first win of the season. In the second heat, Loren Lubach of Sheboygan
showed the way, winning over Mark Scholten of Plymouth. In the third and final
heat race for the Grand Nationals, Jamie Gauger, in the See-Ya Later
Motorsports car, beat Brad Mueller to the line for the win.
In B-Main action for the Grand Nationals, Matt Yancey of Sheboygan picked up
the win and the first of three transfers into the A-main. Cliff Annis (Glenbulah)
and Dave Holm (Kewaskum) also transferred with second and third finishes.
Luke Scholten (Oostburg) started second in the A-main, but didn't stay there
long as he drove right around pole sitter Mark Fieber (Cascade). Scholten
continues momentum he carried over from last season to pick up the first
feature win for the Grand Nationals over second place finisher Tony Miller of
Random Lake. Brad Lubach of Elkhart Lake, Brian Kaat of Plymouth, and Brad
"the Bullet" Dahmer of Sheboygan rounded out the top five.
The Late Model division was second in the rotation for the evening with
twenty-one cars competing in three heats and the A-main feature. In the first
heat, Bill Rezuteck (Big Bend) took a fifth place start and muscled his way to
the point to win over Milwaukee's Jim Letizia. Rick Scheffler of Waukesha took
the checkers in the second heat over Ron Stroika (Mukwonago). While in the
final heat for the Late Models, Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) beat Jim Schmidt
(Cleveland).
In the A-main, Bret Sievert (Mukwonago) took the win, but not without
hard-charging Russ Scheffer and returning former track champion Scott Specht
(Sheboygan Falls) knocking at his door. Scheffler would finish second and
Specht was third. Craig Scheffner (Sheboygan Falls) and Dan Sorce (Franklin)
took the fourth and fifth place finishes in the feature.
Sprints were the third division in the rotation, and competed in four heats,
two B-mains, and one A-main feature. Danny Schlafer (Sussex) picked up the
first heat win over Lance Fassbender (Burnett), and Brian Kristan beat Tony
Wondra (Campbellsport) in the second heat. Brian "The Tornado"
Portschy of Oostburg won the third heat over Jim Melis of Glenbulah.
Kurt Davis of Milwaukee showed the way in the fourth heat over Rob Pribnow of
Mayville.
Michael Emme of Manitowoc had a soft tip—the car hit the berm at the bottom
of the tack and tipped onto its side—in the entrance of turn four, and
Marlin Bowens (Glen Ellyn) took a tumble coming into turn four in separate
incidents during the third heat. Luckily, both drivers were ok.
Ben Schmidt (Plymouth), a rookie in the Sprint division but not a rookie to
racing, picked up his first win in a Sprint by winning the first of two B-main
features over Michael Emme, and J.B. Walter (Plymouth). All three cars would
transfer into the A-main feature. Al Schlafer (Sussex) won the second B-main
with Tim Haddy (Waupun) finishing second. They picked up the last two transfer
spots into the A-main.
In A-main action, Portschy started on the pole and had a fast car all night,
but it wasn't enough to hold off the third heat race winner, Kristan, from
taking charge with his No. 5 for the win. Portschy finished held off Tim Melis
(Plymouth) for second. Leroy Ostrowski (Milwaukee) and Kurt Davis (Milwaukee)
closed out the top five finishing positions.
The Outlaw Compacts were the last division in the rotation with three heats
and an A-main on the night. Jay Riemer of Sheboygan Falls won the first heat
over Jason Juech. Brain Dyke (Sheboygan) picked up the second heat's checkered
flag, and Jeremy Miller (Sheboygan Falls) won the last heat in the division.
Chris Baumann (Elkhart Lake) knew exactly how to get his car to the front of
the field in the A-main feature, taking the win over Kiel's Elijah Reiss.
Riemer finished third, Curtis Moehring (Sheboygan) was fourth, and Steven
Weber (Plymouth) was fifth.
The threatened rain held off for a great night of racing under the fairground
lights this past Saturday. The regular season schedule continues next week at
Plymouth Dirt Track.
