Sorce, Mueller, Schlafer, Born Take Checkers At Plymouth Dirt Track

The air was heavy and the skys were overcast, but that didn't prevent the second to last night of racing from going under way at Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fair grounds on Saturday Night, where the Bud girls and Budweiser Clydesdales made an appearance.

The Late Models, which was the first division up in the rotation,  had three heat races. Jim Letizia (Milwaukee) gunning for lead, takes it on lap three, he had a rocket under him. Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) charges to the lead  over Turk Letizia (Milwaukee). Scheffler went on to pick up the win.  In the second heat,  Dan Sorce (Franklin) worked  Kyle Odekirk for his lead, but runs it a little too high, Odekirk picks up his first heat race win in a Late Model.

In B-main action for the late models, four cars competed for the four transfer spots into the A-main. Mark Zimmerman (Kohler) and Ben Schmidt (Plymouth) would have been the fifth and sixth cars competing in the B-main, but suffered from car troubles and scratched for the race.  The race was still run to determine the transfer order for the cars. Rick Scheffler picked up the win and the top transfer.

Late Model 25 lap A-main.  The caution flys before the completion of the first lap when Nathan Disney (New Castle, Austrailia) spins coming out of turn 4. On the restart the Ray Reiss of Keil goes to the point quick while Turk Letizia (Milwaukee) has him in his sights, hunting for the lead positions.  The caution come out on lap 3 when five cars are collected in a wreck in turn four. Chris Carlson of Greenfield slings by on the high side for the lead after the restart. Todd Jensema (Sheboygan Falls) charges to second, and the caution comes out for debris on the front stretch. After one lap of green flag racing, the caution flew yet again for a spin in turn four.  12 leads on the start but Turk Letiza trys to keep his car stuck on the high side to challenge for the lead lap after lap. The caution flies for more debris on the front stretch. Carlson continues to lead on the restart, bur Dan Sorce gets a nice restart and jumps to second, and looks for the lead on the back stretch lap 10.  He can't quiet complete the pass, but continues to work it, finally grabbing the lead coming to the line on lap 10. Dan Sorce leads Bill Rezutek to the line for the win in the A-main feature for the Late Model division.

Chad Rathke (Random Lake) and Loren Lubach (Sheboygan) race hard in the first of four heat races for the Grand National division, and it was Rathke bringing home the checkers. Matt Yancey of Sheboygan Falls leads the pack to the green flag in the second heat race, keeps a healthy lead over an ever changing second place. Bob Cullen of Chilton reels in Yancey and takes over the lead with two laps remaining in the second heat.  Cullen would go on for the win.  Mark Scholten of Oostburg was back in his car cast and all. Miller suffers some problems while leading the race, pulls himself off of the track. Dahmer takes over the lead.  Dahmer won the heat race over Random Lake driver Jeremy Sauter.  Brad Mueller (Random Lake) goes to the point after starting on the outside pole. He keeps a  healthy lead of about full straightaway. Luke Scholten (Oostburg) came in right behind him, picking up second place.

The Grand Nationals had a 15 lap B-main. The top four cars would transfer. Brian Kaat (Plymouth) leads the race. The caution came out with eight laps remaining as Bob Peter's (Howards Grove) car sat atop the exit of turn two. On the restart, Kaat went right back to where he started. Will Sorce (Frankin)  and Gregg Haese (Two Rivers), fought for the second spot while Ryan Kessler (New Holstein) barely hangs onto the fouth and final transfer over Bernie Schommer (Chilton).

In the Grand National A-main.  Brad Lubach (Elkhart Lake) suffers some problem getting some get up and go on the start, no caution comes out and he gets it fired back up and racing. Mark Scholten (Plymouth) leads the race, while Loren Lubach is hunting him down with Brad Mueller (Random Lake) stalking them. Cars are running three wide for the entirety of the track looking to gain some position in the race. Lubach challenges for the lead on lap 6, with Mueller at his heals. He gets the lead and Mueller continues  to track him down, mounting a charge on the back stretch. Mueller looked high and low, but cant quiet get his car to stick. He completes the pass coming out of turn four on lap 9. for the lead, Lubach doesn't let him get away to fast, but Mueller proves weekend after weekend that he is a force to contend with at Plymouth Dirt Track.  Racing is heaver from seventh on back cars getting three wide again going into turn one.  Jerry Wenzel finds himself in the middle of a car sandwich, but comes out ok. Mueller stretches his lead out over Lubach, while Luke Scholten (Oostburg) challenges and passes Mark Scholten for third position on lap 17. M. Scholten continues to slip back when Chad Rathke passes him on the next lap. Rathke looks on Luke for third. With the white flag out Rathke and Luke race door to door for third, Luke prevails, and Mueller wins.

In the Sprints, which were third in the rotation, points leader Dave Enders (Kiel) pulls the luck of the draw and lands on the pole of the first heat race for the sprint cars. Josh Walter started on the outside pole. Walters grabs the lead after the flag. Enders follows up in second while Robbie Worth challenges them for the  lead from third position. Each car using a different line. Enders looks high and low to get back to the lead. Robbie Wirth slings past Enders for second. Walters wins.

In the second heat race, Tony Wondra (Campbellsport) starts out on the pole. Bill Hafemann (Waldo) jumps to the lead on the start. Brian Kristan (Beach Park, IL) starts to hunt down Hafemann after putting a huge slide job on Wodra. Hafemann maintains a full straightway lead.  Hafemann picks up the win.  Danny Schlafer (Sussex) and Jerry Ski (Milwaukee) race wing to wing for the first position in the third heat,  and it was Schlafer picking up the win.  Steve Muth (Mukwanago) goes for a spin in turn two on lap 7, but keeps it running, and doesn't bring out the caution. Danny Schlafer continues with his domination at Plymouth Dirt Track.  In the fourth heat race,  Barry Maas (Waldo) charges to the lead after starting on the inside of row four.   In the fifth and final heat race for the sprint cars started with a slight sprinkle of rain falling on the track. Al Schlafer (Sussex) charges to the point over Brian Portschy (Oostburg). Schlafer picked up the win in the heat race. Portchy was second.

There were two Sprint Car B-mains, and  Enders finds himself again having to race his way into the A-main.  Caution comes out when Steve Muth and Adam Miller of Plymouth spun in turn two to bring out the caution. Ken Jay Fiedler (Sheboygan Falls) suffered from a  right front tire going down, his team got his tire changed just in time for him to get back out on the track before the one to go was dropped, he would be allowed to race. Wernes also came back on the track after pulling off before the initial start. Fiedler rockets through field after start. The caution came out that Ken Jay Fiedler may need to get him back into contention for a transfer into the A-main feature. On the restart Fiedler charges to the point. Tim Haddy, who had taken the lead before the last caution came took a tumble on the back stretched rolling about four times, coming to a stop parked up against the outside retaining wall. He walked away. Green White Checkers after the red flag. Dave Enders won, Fiedler was second, and Terry Marten picked up the third -transfer from the first of two B-mains.

Michael Emme (Manitowoc) gets a big start he leads by half a straightaway by lap two. Ryan Tessman (Watertown) takes a roll in turn one, lands on his side, tire flys off into turn two. Tessman was ok. Emme won.

In the Sprint Car twenty-five A-main.  Leroy Ostrowski started on the pole of the A-main feature with Jerry Ski on the outside. Points leader Dave Enders started on the inside of row nine, while his closest challenger started in the fifth row.  Ostrowskie stays at the point, but the 99h brings out the caution spinning in turn two. On the restart, Portschy does a 360 and gets other cars involved, rocking and rolling everywhere. The red came out due to the amounts of cars that needed to be hauled off by the wrecker due to the damage received. On the restart Lance Fassbender (Burnett) charges to scond and looks for first on Ostrowski. Brian Kristan goes to third over Ski. The caution comes out when  Ski spun and Al Schlafer was involved. Fassbender takes advantage of a slip up by Ostrowski, who remained in second with Danny Schlafer and Kristan after him. Kristan breaks on the front stretch on lap 7. Maas is now sitting in third hunting down the 25 for third. Fassbender begins to lap the field. 14 laps are in, when the caution comes out because Davis couldnt pull himself completely off the race track. Fassbender was penalty for passing before the restart of the race. That puts Ostrowski back at the lead. Lapped cars Portschy and Semmelmann are between Ostrowski and Fassbender. Ostrowski leads the cars, Schlafer passes him for the lead.  Danny Schlafer takes the win in the feature.

There are three heat races for the Outlaw compacts featuring. Samantha Portchy (Oostburg), daughter of sprint car driver Brian Portschy, making her debut in the outlaw compacts division takes a roll coming into turn three. She became eligible to race when she turned fourteen on Friday August 25th. Tammy Dickmann Flunker keeps to the point on the restart after the red flag. She would go on for the win in the first heat races for the Compacts.  Kufuss (Howards Grove) checks  out in the second heat race for the Outlaw Compacts, he parks his car in victory lane.  Jay Reimer of Sheboygan Falls pulls out to a ten car link lead over Corey Peters of Plymouth.

Steven Weber (Plymouth) charges to the lead in the A-main Feature for the Outlaws, but the caution flys before the completion of one lap. Cars were stacked up and spun around on the back stretch. Weber takes off once again  but Dennis Born (Plymouth) out powers him on the back stretch for the lead, he stretches his lead to five car lengths. Scott Long (Waldo) over takes for second, and the Riemer is looking for the third position, taking it on lap 3. Kufuss moves up to fourth while the leader begins to lap traffic. Born wins the race. Long was second, Riemer was third, Kufuss fourth and Corey Peters  (Plymouth) was fifth.

There is only one more night remaining in the 2006 season. There is no racing next weekend due to the Sheboygan County Fair, but be sure to check out Championship night where there will be a DJ after the races behind the grandstands.
