Russ Scheffler, Again At Plymouth Dirt Track
(Plymouth) An overcast sky seemed threatening to the Plymouth Race track this
past Saturday night, but it cleared up for a great night of racing, on a very
tacky, fast track. All in all there were 111 cars ready to rock the
fairgrounds.
Sprints were the first in the order, and with forty-one cars in attendance,
there were five heat races. Ken Jay Fiedler (Sheboygan Falls) won the first
heat race, and T.J. Luedke (Plymouth) parked his No. 21t Sprint in victory
lane at the completion of the second heat. Danny Schlafer (Sussex) beat Earl
Possi of Escanaba, MI in the third heat. Terry Marten (Sheboygan Falls) came
out victorious in the fourth heat over Tim Haddy (Lomira). In the fifth
and final heat, it was Brian Kristan (Beach Park, IL) started on the pole and
never looked back to pick up the win.
In the first of two B-mains for the Sprints, Scott Semmelmann (Brookfield)
beat Troy Wondra (Lomira) and Rob Pribnow (Lomira) for the win, while all
three drivers would transfer into the A-main.
Mike Kertcher used the high groove to his advantage in the second B-main, he
started on the outside pole, and went on for the win. Points leader Dave
Enders (Kiel) was in danger of missing the A-main and losing his points lead
after having issues during his heat race. He had to race his way from the back
to get into the A-main. He rocketed his way to third and final transfer. Josh
Walter (Plymouth) finished second to be the other transer spot.
In A-main action for the Sprints, Jim Melis (Glenbeulah) had a quiet the hot
rod under him beating Lance Fassbender (Burnette), Fiedler, Kristan and
Semmelmann. Ender's finished sixth, while his challenger in the points,
Schlafer finished eighth. Ozzie Wesener (Plymouth) took a hard roll on the
back stretch during the heat, tumbling five times before coming to a landing
in the enterance to the pits mid back stretch. He walked away, and was okay.
Late Models were up after the Sprints in the rotation, with twenty-five cars
competing in three heats, one B-main, and one A-main. George Scheffler
(Waukesha) picked up the first heat race win over Turk Letizia (Milwaukee),
and Randy "The Mighty" Markwardt (Sheboygan Falls) won the second
heat, beating Dan Sorce (Franklin) to the line. In the third and final heat,
Rick Scheffler (Waukesha) out paced Bret Seivert (Mukwanago).
T.J. Dolhun (West Allis) won the B-main over Bill Rezutek of Big Bend, Al
Atkinson (Milwaukee), and Melissa Singer (Waldo). All four transfered into the
A-main.
Russ Scheffler had the car to beat in the A-main and proved once again that he
knows how to get around the Plymouth Dirt Track. He won the A-main, with Rick
Scheffler finishing second, Sievert third, Atkinson was fourth. George
Scheffler rounded out the top five.
In the Grand National division, there were also twenty-five cars competing in
three heats, one B-main, and the twenty-five lap A-main feature. Matt Yancey
(Sheboygan) picked up the checkers in the first heat race for the Grand
Nationals, and Chad Rathke (Random Lake) won the second heat. Fellow Random
Lake native Jeremy Sauter charged to the win in the third and final heat in
that division.
Brad Dahmer (Sheboygan Falls) looked to be a car to beat in the A-main,
passing a number of cars to get to the point. Coming to turn three on the
final lap, he suffered problems and had to coast to a fourth place finish.
Brian Genske (Cleveland) came back for the win with Scott Haupt (Belgium),
Rathke, Dahmer, and Doug Teunissen (Sheboygan Falls).
Outlaw Compacts had two heat races with Mark Kufuss picking up the first heat
over Chris Baumann (Elkhart Lake). Jason Juech of West Bend grabbed the win in
the second heat over Tammy Flunker of Cascade.
In their A-main actiong, Kufuss pulled out all the stops and went on to win
beating Jay Riemer (Sheboygan Falls), Jeremy Miller (Sheboygan Falls), Juech,
and Baumann.
There are only two weeks of racing remaining in the Plymouth Dirt Track 2006
season, and next weekend be sure to check out the Budweiser Clydesdales and
girls from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. And don't forget there there is no
racing Labor Day weekend due to the Sheboygan County Fair.
