Kertchner Wins Caution Free Sprint Main At Plymouth

(Plymouth) It was a beautiful night for racing under the fairground lights in Sheboygan County at Plymouth Dirt Track, and a grandstand full of fans seemed to agree. The rotation for the evening was Late Models, Grand Nationals, Sprints and Outlaw Compacts.

After starting on the outside pole of the first heat race in the Late Model division, Jim Schmidt of Cleveland took off away from the rest of the field in the first of three heat races to pick up a win, beating the second place finisher Charlie Schmidt(Oostburg) by about half a lap.

Todd Jensema of Sheboygan Falls beat Brad Seivert (Mukwanago) to the flag, after some heated racing between the two lap after lap. Tim Carmen finished third.

Rick Scheffler of Waukesha used the outside groove to his advantage in the final heat for the Late Models. Jim Letizia (Milwaukee) finished second.

In the first of four Grand National heat races, Brad Mueller of Random Lake went to the point by running the higher of the two racing grooves on the track. He over took Doug Teunnissen (Sheboygan Falls), and went on to win, Teunnissen right behind him.

Brian Genske of Cleveland won the second heat over Matt Yancey (Sheboygan Falls) and Loren Lubach (Sheboygan).

Cliff Annis of Glenbuelah kept Brad Dahmer (Sheboygan Falls) behind him in the third heat for the Grand Nationals for the the win.

Scott Sohrweide of Chilton, who started last, raced his way up through the field to grab the lead coming to the white flag, racing door to door with Paul Perronne of Plymouth. Sohrweide prevailed taking the win in heat.

The Sprint division also had four heats, with forty cars looking to make their way into the 25 Lap A-main feature. Ozzie Wesener (Plymouth) charged to the lead and lead by a full straightway coming to the checkers for the win in the first heat.

Al Schlafer (Sussex) won the second heat over Brian Perl (St. Peter), and Kurt Davis (Milwaukee) won the third, moving him closer to catching Danny Schlaffer (Sussex) on the all time wins list.Leroy Ostrowski (Milwaukee) and Terry Marten (Sheboygan Falls) both rolled during the same caution in seperate incidents, both of them were ok.  In the fourth and final heat, Dave Enders of Kiel beats Rob Pribnow of Lomira to the line to pick up the checkers.

The Outlaw compacts had two heats with  Jeremy Miller of Random Lake winning the first heat over Jay Riemer of Sheboygan Falls, and Travis Moehring (Sheboygan) came across the line before Scott Long (Waldo) in the second heat.

Randy Markwardt of Sheboygan had to race his way into the A-main by competing in the B-main for the Late Models, but he proved that he wasn't called "Mighty" for nothing and charged to the point to pick up the transfer.  Also picking up transfer spots were Melissa Singer (Waldo), Henry Dickman (Sheboygan), and Matt Buckmann.

In the B-main for the Grand National division Dan Sorce of Franklin used the outside groove to get to the lead and pick up the transfer into the A-main. Greg Kempf (Kiel), Jamie Theobald (Sheboygan), and Bernie Schommer.

The Sprint cars had two heat races, and T.J. Luedke of Plymouth came out victorious in the first one to pick up one of three transfers from that race. Brain Portschy (Oostburg) and Ken Jay Fiedler (Sheboygan Falls) also transfered. In the second heat Troy Wondra of Lomira picked up the win and the transfer. Tim Haddy, also from Lomira, and David O'Neal (Milwaukee) transfered in as well.

In the Late Model's A-main, Jim and Turk Letizia of Milwaukee and Russ and Rick Scheffler of Waukesha swapped the lead back and forth, but it was Russ Scheffler claiming the win at the end of the twenty-five lap feature, Sievert was second and Rick Scheffler was third.

Chad Rathke of Random Lake picked up the win in the Grand National A-main. He was closely followed by Teunissen. Dahmer was third, Brad Lubach (Elkhart Lake) was fourth, and Luke Scholton (Oostburg) was fifth.

The Sprints had a record setting A-main, racing from flag to flag with no cautions. The race took only six and a half minutes to complete. Mike Kertchner, who is filling in for Scott Sipple in the No. 5s Sprint kept to the point even after heavy charges were made by Danny Schlafer and Rob Pribnow. Kertchner kept them behind him and went on to win the twenty-five lap feature. Schlafer came in second, Pribnow third, Jim Melis (Glenbuelah) fourth, and Al Schlafer rounded out the top five.

Chris Baumann in the Outlaw Compact division beat Jay Riemer to the line in the fifteen lap feature, with Jeremy Miller finishing third, Scott Long was fourth, and Travis Moehring was fifth.

Next week the vintage cars will be coming out to race after they were rained out during their June race. Be sure to come check them out along with the hottest racing action in the area at Plymouth Dirt Track.
