Plymouth Dirt Track Opener
by Staci Abrahamson
(Plymouth, WI) Plymouth Dirt Track Racing kicked off its second year at the
Sheboygan County Fairgrounds this past Saturday, May 6, 2006.
To start off the night, there was a memorial for Harold “Happy” Laack. His
son Gary “Drock” Laack paraded around the speedway with a black flag in
Brian Portschy’s (Oostburg) No. 55p sprint. “Happy,” as some may know,
was a member of the Sheboygan County Fair Board for about 15 years, and was
instrumental to the racing program.
The sprints were the first division to race that night. With forty cars
attempting to race for the A-main feature, there were four heat races.
Kurt Davis (Milwaukee) became the first official winner of the season by
winning the first sprint heat over Rob Pribnow (Lomira).
“Felt good since that was a new car for me,” said Davis. “Track was good
for my heat race, starting to dry out a little bit, but that is normal
here.”
Fellow Milwaukee native, Jerry Ski took the checkered flag over Michael Emme
(Manitowoc) in the second heat. The third heat race saw last year’s track
champion, Danny Schlafer (Sussex), win by finishing ahead of Lomira driver,
Tony Wondra.
Dave Lisowe (Chilton) grabbed the win in the fourth heat over hard-charge
Scott Sippel (Elkhart Lake).
There were two B-mains ran to determine the final six drivers for the A-main
feature. The first of two was caution full, with four cars either rolling or
tipping. Dale Peter, Bill Taylor (Kewaskum), Brian Pearl (St. Peter), and
16-year-old rookie, Brandon Thone(Sheboygan) are all okay after the four
separate incidents.
Shane Wenninger (Kewaskum) won the first heat for his first win in a sprint
car. Ozzie Wiesner and John Sauermilch (Sheboygan) finished two-three behind
him.
The second B-main for the sprints was just as caution filled, but only one car
was involved in a roll over. Adam Miller (Plymouth) walked away after rolling
his car in turns three and four.
Lomira native Tim Haddy walked away with his first checkers by winning over
Tony Wondra (Campbellsport) and Ken Jay Fiedler (Sheboygan).
Terry Marten (Manitowoc) lead from green to checkers in the sprint car A-main,
he beat his teammate Emme by about a quarter of a lap. Sippel finished third,
Jim Melis (Glenbuelah), a new comer to PDTR, was fourth, and Troy Wondra was
fifth.
Thirty-seven Grand National cars were looking to sling some dirt this weekend
as well. There were four heats in this division.
Josh McDonald won the first heat race over Cliff Annis (Kiel), while Luke
Scholten (Oostburg) grabbed the flag in the second heat. Brad Mueller won the
third heat race, and Brain Genske of Cleveland picked up the win in the fourth
heat.
In the first of two B-mains Brad Lubach (Elkhart Lake) beat Scott Sohrweide
(Chilton) and Don Source to the flag.
Brian Kaat (Plymouth) won the second B-main over Jeremy Sauter (Random Lake)
and Troy Theobald (Sheboygan Falls).
The A-main feature winner was Mark Scholten of Plymouth who out ran Tony
Miller (Random Lake) and Genske.
Late Models also had a high car count with 25. The three heat races had Todd
Jesema (Sheboygan Falls), Russ Scheffler (Waukesha), and Dan Source
(Franklin) picking up wins.
Bill Rezutek of Big Bend charged to the point in the B-main and won over Ron
Stroika (Mukwanago) and Ben Schmidt (Plymouth).
In the A-main, returning driver Randy Markwardt (Sheboygan) came out
victorious over Rick Scheffler (Waukesha) and Al Atkinson (Milwaukee). Tim
Carmen (Sheboygan Falls) finished fourth and Turk Letizia (Milwaukee) was
fifth.
“This is the first win, actually, had no wins last year at all. Been a
little bit of a dry spell for us, but feels good,” Markwardt said.
There were two heat races for the Outlaw Compact division, 18 cars racing.
Josh Long (Waldo) won the first heat over Travis Moehring (Sheboygan), and
Justin Blackburn won the second, outpacing Jeremy Miller (Random Lake).
Josh Long picked up two flags on the night, when he out ran his father, Scott
Long (Waldo) in the A-main. Jay Reimer (Sheboygan Falls) was third; Chad
Reiderer was fourth, and Justin Blackburn was fifth.
The numbers keep going up for Plymouth Dirt Track racing, where on Saturday
night there was a car count of 123, a new record.
