Season Finale At Plymouth Dirt Track
(Plymouth) It has been an amazing season at Plymouth Dirt Track, and the
championship night reflected just that with 119 cars and drivers looking to
wrap up points championships or grab the upped prize money for features. Fan
attendance was the highest it has been all season with the grandstands almost
completely full.
Late Models had the first four heats in the evening. Turk Letizia of Milwaukee
won the first, and Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) won the second. Points leader
Scott Specht (Sheboygan Falls) won the third heat for his twelfth checkered
this season. R.W. Aschenbrenner of Oneida won the final of the heats in the
Late Models.
In the Sprints four heats, Kiel’s Dave Enders was top dog in the first heat,
and Danny Schlafer (Sussex), the point leader, grabbed the victory in the
second heat. David O’Neal of Milwaukee won his first heat races at PDT
from the third heat. Jerry Ski, also a Milwaukee native, won in the fourth
heat for the sprints—his fourth flag of the season.
Brian Genske of Cleveland won the first of four heats in the Grand National
division, and Plymouth driver Ben Schmidt picked up the checkers in the
second. Random Lake’s Jeremy Sauter was victorious in the tird heat, while
Scott Sohrweide of Chilton grabbed twelfth flag of the season in the Grand
Nationals at Plymouth Dirt Track.
Points leader Josh Long (Waldo) won the first of three heats in the Outlaw
Compact division, while points challenger Jay Riemer (Kohler) won the second
heat. Dale Baumann of Elkhart Lake won the third heat.
Charlie Schmidt (Oostburg) out ran Tim Carmen (Sheboygan Falls) to the flag in
the B-main for the Late Models, both trasnfering along with Benjamin Brinkman
and Ron Stroika (Mukwanago) to the A-main.
In the two B-mains for the Sprints, Terry Marten (Sheboygan Falls) won over
Alex Bleisner and Adam Miller (Plymouth)in the first. Tony Wondra
(Campbellsport) chased down the flag in the second B-main with Keith Olejnik
(Sun Prarie) and Ryan Tessman (Watertown) at his heals.
The Grand Nationals one B-main had Tim Anderson of Sheboygan showing the way
and picking up his third flag this season. Andy Fuhrmann finished runner up
for the other transfer spot to the A-main.
Scott Specht, who already had the championship clinched, was looking to grab
the $1,300 top prize for the A-main feature in the Late Models, he seeme dto
have it, but Scott Cramer (Random lake) was chasing him down and making a hard
charge. Coming out of turn four to the flag, Spccht and Cramer were wheel to
wheel. The cars connected leaving the door open for Rick Scheffler (Waukesha)
to pick up the win and the check. Rookie of the Year was Sheboygan Falls
native, Todd Jensema.
Danny Schlafer and Lance Fassbender (Burnett) were within point of each
other for the Sprint championship and wound up starting in the same row for
the A-main. Dave Enders booked it from the start, but was over taken by David
O’ Neal. O’Neal went on to in the race and Danny Schlafer finsihed second,
giving him the points he needed to win the Championship. Dave Enders finished
third. Barry Maas took home the Rookie of the Year honors for the Sprints.
I the Grand National A-main, Scott Sohrweide went to the point in a new car
and never looked back. He won by almost half a lap over Troy Theobald
(Sheboygan). Brad Lubach (Elkhart Lake)had a fifith place finish which
allowed him to claim his first championship. Lubach was also the Rookie of the
Year in this divsion.
Scott Long (Waldo) didn’t take long to get to the front in the Outlaw
Compacts A-main over Corey Edler (Cascade). Long went on to win the race, and
his son Josh Long (Waldo) won the championship for the second year in a
row. Elijah Riess of Kiel took home Rookie of the Year honors.
All in all, it was a fantastic season at Plymouth Dirt Track. The future is
promising for some more great, fan friendly racing.
