Scheffler Wins Fourth Feature At Plymouth
by Staci Abrahamson

(Plymouth) It was the second to last night of the regular Plymouth Dirt Track racing season, and the racing keeps getting hotter heading towards the season championship.

The Grand National Division was first in the rotation for the evening.

Brain Kaat of Plymouth won the first of four heat races in his No. 15 car. That was Kaat’s fifth flag in the heats, and sixth flag over-all, as he has one feature win this season.

Dean Hornick (Kiel) chased down his sixth flag this season as well with his win in the second heat. He has three heat , one B-main, and one A-main feature wins this season at PDT.

In the third heat Scott Sohrweide of Chilton charged to his sixth heat win this season.

Plymouth driver Ben Schmidt won the fourth heat over Tim Anderson of Sheboygan. It is Schmidt’s first heat win and second flag of the season.

In the B-main, Jeremy Sauter of Random Lake took charge from lap one and dominated. Jerry Krebsback stayed with him, but couldn’t quite get to Sauter. Sauter has won two B-mains this season.

Brian Genske (Cleveland) grabbed the lead early on and rocketed to a full straightaway lead over the second. Scott Sohrweide took that position with the daunitng task of catching Genske, who was getting held up by slower traffic.

Sohrweide ate away at Genske’s lead on the outside groove. He passed Genske in turn four coming to the flag.

Late Models action had three heats, with Scott Specht (Sheboygan Falls) once again parking his car in Victory Lane for the eleventh time this season.

Milwaukee driver Turk Letizia won the second heat over Nate Winkel (Sheboygan Falls).

Scott Cramer of Random Lake picked up the flag in the third heat for his second win this season.

Charlie Schmidt of Oostburg put his car at the point in the B-main and won over Mark Zimmerman (Kohler) and Melissa Singer (Waldo).

In the A-main, R.W. Aschenbrenner took the race lead and was being challenged lap after lap by Dan Source (Franklin).  Source to the outside looked to take the lead, but wound up going three wide in turn one with a lapped car. Aschenbrenner and Source connected and were not factors for the win the rest of the evening.

It was Russ Scheffler (Waukesha) parking in Victory Lane for the eight time this summer. It was also his fourth A-main win this season.  Todd Jensema (Sheboygan Falls) was runner up, and Al Atkinson (Milwaukee) was right behind him.

Sprints were up after the Late Models with their four heats, two B-mains, and tthe A-main feature of the night.  K.J. Skelton (Cascade) won the first heat for his 68th career flag in a sprint car.

Scott Sippel (Elkhart Lake) picked up the flag in the second heat with Terry Marten (Sheboygan Falls) hot on his tail.

In the third heat, Joe Wipperfurth of Sun Prairie had his No. 2 sprint hooked up, and charged to the win.

Michael Emme (Manitowoc) won the final heat race over Danny Schlafer (Sussex).

Troy Wondra of Lomira set the pace in the first B-main and took the checkered flag and first of three transfer spots in to the A-main for the night.

In the second B-main, Tim Haddy (Lomira) picked up his first B-main win this season at Plymouth. Al Schlafer (Sussex) picked up the final transfer spot by sliding across the line sideways—and eventually tipping on its side in front of the flagman-- just ahead of T.J. Luedke (Plymouth). Those cars connected coming out of turn four heading towards the finish. Terry Marten bulleted through the field and won the A-main feature of the night, but not without incident. His teammate, Michael Emme had run over Marten’s tire and went for a tumble after the caution for a negated start was thrown. Emme was ok.

Joe Wipperfurth and Scott Semmelmann (Brookfield) chased hhim down, but couldn’t catch him, finishing two-three behind him.

Outlaw Compact’s had two heat races, with Josh Long(Waldo) picking up the first flga. That is Long’s seventh flag this season in the Outlaw division.Jay Riemer of Kohler also took his seventh flag this season when he won the second heat.

Scott Long (Waldo) beat Corey "the Junkyard Dog" Edler to the line in the A-main for his first feature win this season. Josh Long came in right behind them.

Next week there is no racing action at the fairgrounds as the Sheboygan County Fair will have full reign, but be sure to come out for the season championships on the 10th of September. This is where the winner of the Late Models A-main will receive $1000, a $200 increase from the regular pay out for a win at Plymouth Dirt Track.
