Schlaffer, Atkinson, Schmidt And Long Take Wins At Plymouth
by Staci Abrahamson
(Plymouth) It was another record setting night out at Plymouth Dirt Track on
Saturday. The car count keeps going up as the season progresses, making it
more and more exciting for racing with the increasing number of competitors.
The sprint cars were first in the rotation out of the five divisions, which
included a special appearance by the Milwaukee Stock Car Association Vintage
cars.
Altogether there were 40 sprint cars competing in four heats, two B-mains and
one very exciting A-main.
Troy Hephner (Hartford), rookie Brian Perl (St. Peter), points leader Danny
Schlaffer (Sussex), and K.J. Skelton (Cascade) all picked up heat wins.
While B-main checkereds went to Scott Semmelmann (Brookfield) and Brian
Kristan (Beach Park, IL).
The A-main feature saw Danny Schlaffer pick up his 61 win in sprint cars, he
now trails K.J Skelton by one race on the all time wins list. Skelton finished
second and Troy Wondra of Lomira finished third.
Late Models had 19 cars looking to pick up wins in two heats and an
A-main. Dan Sorce (Franklin) picked up the first heat win, and his first
checkered at PDT this season, while Scott Specht (Sheboygan Falls) was once
again in dominating form and won the second heat race by almost half a lap.
That is was his fifth checkered this season.
The "Milwaukee Madman" Al Atkinson took off and grabbed the win and
his second checkered flag this season in the A-main feature, Scott Cramer of
Random Lake finished second.
The Grand National Division , like the Sprints, had four heats, two B-mains,
and the always entertaining A-main.
Brett Wenzel of Two Rivers, Dean Horneck of Kiel, Scott Sohrwiede of Chilton,
and Brian Kaat of Plymouth took the heat wins. Jeremy Sauter (Random Lake) and
Josh Borden (Port Washington) won the B-mains.
Ben Schmidt picked up his first win at PDT by winning the A-main
feature. Brad Lubach (Elkhart Lake) ran a good race and finished second;
he was followed by Scott Sohrwiede.
Outlaw Compacts had an equally exciting night. The fans saw Corey Edler
(Cascade) back in his car and back in victory lane with the first heat. Jason
Jueck frove his No. 42 to the front in the second heat race, and Jay Riemer
(Kohler) also parked his car in victory land after the third heat.
Josh Long of Waldo won the A-main over his father Scott Long (Waldo). Corey
Edler came in the third.
The specialty races for the night with the Vintage cars had one heat and one
15 lap A-main. George Shields won the heat, and Bill Behm of Lomira won the
A-main on the very slick track .
It was an exciting night, with the promise of more to come. Be sure to check
out the IRA next week, where the Grand Nationals will have a full program, and
the Outlaw Compacts will have an A-main feature. Don’t forget that the
mid-season champion ship night is on July 9.
