Kaeding Uses Last Lap Pass For Plymouth WoO Win
by Staci Abrahamson
(Plymouth) There were 49 sprint cars ready to rock and roll for the World
Of Outlaws annual trip to Plymouth Dirt Track this Saturday night. The
atmosphere was electric and muggy, but fans and drivers were ready to go
racing.
The program for the night was changed a couple of times due to a thunderstorm
that rolled in around 5:00 p.m. and dropped a lot of rain during it’s ten
minute burst, and the strict city curfew of 11:00p.m. for Plymouth.
It was the for first time since 1990 that the World of Outlaws
didn’t qualify by running individual laps around the 1/3 mile dirt
track. Instead, they used the passing points system that PDT uses week
in and week out. The top twenty in passing points from the five heat race run
got an automatic bid to run in the A-main feature. The next twenty would have
to race each other in the B-main for the transfer spots to the A-main.
The five ten lap heat races saw rookie Tim Kaeding (San Jose, CA), Donny
Schatz (Fargo, ND), Steve Meyer (Sheboygan Falls), Jason Sides
(Bartlett, TN) and last years A-main feature winner Joey Saldana (Brownsburg,
IN) all taking heat wins. Joey Saldana had the most passing points,
which allowed him to start on the pole for the feature.
The B-main feature was caution free for the entire 12 laps, and rookie
sensation Brandon Wimmer, who missed his high school graduation to race at
Eldora Raceway in Rossburg, Ohio, started second and took the win over Tim
Shaffer (Aliquippa, PA), Craig Dollansky (Elk River, MN), and Joe Roe
(Pleasant Prairie, WI), all of whom also transferred into the final four
starting positions of the A-main feature.
It was an exciting A-main. Danny "the Dude" Lasoski (Dover, MO)
brought out the caution at lap three, and couldn’t rejoin the race because
of ignition problems. Saldana paced the field until lap 23 when the caution
came out. Kaeding grabbed the lead and raced hard; he had his car every
which way but wrecked, fighting to keep the lead.
Around lap 34 Saldana and recent Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee Steve
"the King" Kinser got together and Kinser spun. The caution came
out, and Saldana was sent to the back while Kinser kept his second place
position.
Kinser took the lead from Kaeding on lap 25, and got caught up in traffic. On
the last lap of the 40 lap feature, Kaeding went to the outside and took the
lead and the win for his first feature win this season.
"Great. We’ve been struggling all year, just got lucky tonight. Steve [Kinser]
got by us. I tried a balls out move and tried to get back around him and hoped
it stuck," said a very happy Tim Kaeding.
Look for Kaeding to be in the hunt.
