Champions Crowned And The Sprints Invade Oshkosh
by Dave Buss
August 30, 2005
The largest crowd of the season packed the bleachers for the final night of
racing at the Powercom Speed Zone in 2005 to see the Division Champions
crowned and watch the Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprints race. Jay Schraufnagel
would turn in a performance to remember in the Budweiser Modifieds division
going from his roof on lap one to a fifth place finish.
The Charter Communication Street Stock division belonged to Jerry Kope all
season long but on this night the division belonged to Scott Solomon. Solomon
would grab the lead on lap one and never look back in a race that only saw one
caution early in the event. Scott Beckman may have had the fastest car at the
end but time would run out on him in his pursuit of Solomon. Solomon and
Beckman would lead Fank Formiller, Gary Neau, and Mark Schultz to the line to
complete the top 5.
John Hall covered the field in the Sighmakers Dirt Devil division leading from
Green to checked in a commanding performance. Jon Schultz would get a scare in
his effort to secure the division Championship when he lost a tire on the last
lap of the event. Bryan Monday who was second in points going into the night
would be unable to close the gap with his 4th place finish though. Mike
Mueller would grab second and Ron Koenig third with Bob Fahser rounding out
the top five.
The Grand National division would take the track with the best point battle of
the night left to be decided. Terry Van Roy led Larry Ricards by 2 points
going in and Tim Doehling by just 4 points. Nick Schumacher would lock up in a
great battle with Dion Whal before relinquishing the top spot to Wahl who
would hold the field off to pick up the win in the feature event. The points
battle would rage until the final lap as Doehling, Van Roy, and Richards
fought it for positions throughout the entire race in the end it would be Van
Roy securing an emotional Championship with a 4th place finish. Doehling would
grab second while Richards settled for sixth.
The Budweiser Modified division would have Paul Parker grabbing the early lead
in the feature event before a lightning fast Brian Mullen came calling. After
a brief battle Mullen would take over the lead spot and check out from the
pack. The story thought would be Jay Schruafnagel who rolled on the first lap,
took his car to pit lane got the thumbs up from his crew and returned to the
track without losing a lap. Restarting dead last Schraufnagel showed why he is
the Budweiser Modified division champ storming through the field to finish
fifth. Paul Parker would finish second with Russ Reinwald and Jarrod Anvelink
completing the top five.
The final event at the Powercom Speed Zone for 2005 would be a 22 car Bumper
to Bumper IRA sprint feature. The field would be trimmed to 17 cars with a
spectacular lap one five car wreck, luckily no one was hurt. The race seemed
to turn into a battle of the fittest as numerous cautions slowed the action on
the track. K.J. Skelton looked like the man to beat all night until falling
victim to Scott Young's great restart after one of the cautions. Young would
hold on for the win while Skelton would have to settle for second. Scotty
Neitzel would secure third ahead of Todd Hepfner and Kurt Winker.
A special thanks to the drivers, crews and all the fans for a great 2005
season at the Powercom Speed Zone.
