Racing Action Winding down In 05 At The Zone

Great, clean driving was the headline as the program at the Powercom Speed Zone on Tuesday night flew by. In the end there were a lot of familiar faces making their way to Victory land and one first time winner.

The Charter Communication Street Stock division would bring us familiar face back to Victory Lane but also a first time winner in the class. Jasper Drengler would hold off a hard charging Jerry Kope to pick up his first win at the Powercom Speed Zone in a Street Stock after years in the Dirt Devil division. Drengler grabbed the lead using the outside groove and quickly began to pull away from the field but a caution near the mid point gave Kope the break that he needed to catch back up. A strong restart by Drengler would give him some breathing room but Kope slowly started to reel him in. When the white flag flew the cars were bumper to bumper. But when the Checkered flag flew they were side by side with Drengler winning by inches! The top five would be completed by Tim Reichenberger, Mark Schultz and Adam Pugh.

So many times he was so close this year, but on this night Dion Wahl finished in Victory Lane in the Grand Nationals division Wahl would grab the advantage on lap three and then have to hold on as the event would go green to checkers with no caution. Tim Doehling tried everything in his book to get to the back bumper of Wahl but the 77 car was good in just about every groove on the track. Wahl would lead Doehling to the line by three car lengths. Dan Wirl would have a strong run grabbing third, while Terry Van Roy and Dan Schumacher rounded out the top 5.

Jay Schraufnagel returned to his past form in the Budweiser Modified division with a dominating victory. Brian Drexler was the man to beat early as he weaved through traffic to grab the lead on lap four. Drexler’s lead disappeared though when the caution flag was thrown a few short laps later and Schraufnagel up to third. On the restart Schraufnagel would waste little time grabbing second then first down the back stretch. From that point on there would be no looking back as he would lead Russ Reinwald, Chris Engels, Travis Spaulding and Larry Zirbel to the line.

“Someone finally beat him!” Those were the words of Ron Koenig as he exited his car in Victory lane after claiming his first Signmakers Dirt Devil A main win of the year. Koenig was referring to Jon Schultz who has been fast all year at the Zone. Schultz’s luck would finally turn on him this week as car problems sent him to the pits and left him two laps down after grabbing the lead midway through the race. Koenig was complaining though and took full advantage of the situation to turn in a much needed victory. Bryan Monday, who also had a great run, made it interesting on the last lap as a move to the outside came up a few feet short at the finish line. Mike Mueller, Dustin Schwandt, and Gordon Lewis completed the top five.
