Points Races Shaping Up At The Zone
by Dave Buss
7/26/05
While the temperatures in the air was a lot cooler than previous weeks,
the action on the track was red hot. Fans witnessed the end of a win streak,
the return to form of a popular Modified driver, and a familiar story when the
night was over.
The Johnsonville Brats Dirt Late Models would take the track for the
evening’s first feature and it would be Turk Letizia leading the way. Nick
Anvelink would grab the lead, after starting in the back, diving underneath
the car of Russ Scheffler. Anvelink would not look back grabbing his second
win at the Zone in 2005. Scheffler, the Fast Qualifier for the evening, would
fall back after a strong run up front and finish fifth. Rounding out the top
five would be Ron Stroika, James Letizia, and Nate Winkel.
The Grand Nationals would provide an exciting two way battle for the win with
Steve Seitz grabbing his first feature win of the year at the Powercom Speed
Zone. Seitz would wrestle the lead from Dion Wahl early in the race and lead
the rest of the way but not without some tough driving. Wahl would pressure
Seitz on just about every lap of the event before having to settle for the
runner up spot. Troy Weich, Tim Doehling, and Larry Richards would engage in a
three way battle for third with Weich eventually grabbing the spot with
Doehling and Ricahrds completing the top five.
The Charter Communication Street Stock division would find finish under
caution which was unfortunate because it was fixing to be a great finish.
Jerry Kope would not complain though as he grabbed his fifth win of the year
at the Powercom Speed Zone. The race would be a five car show with Kope, Jerry
Winkler, JR Madell, Scott Solomon, and Mike Nehmer battling it out for the top
spot. The top five would spend the second half of the race in two and three
way battles around the entire track. In the end though Kope would lead Madell,
Winkler, Solomon, and Nehmer to the line.
The Budweiser Modifieds provided one of those races that are so hard to write
about as Jay Schraufnagel grabbed the lead after a rash of early cautions and
simply check out. Schraufnagel would pick up the win with an advantage of ¾
of a lap. Behind the 10s the rest of the field would battle it out until the
very end with Rookie Mike Mullen picking up a solid second position and Shawn
Frelich grabbing third after leading the opening laps. Chris Engel continued
his strong performance in Oshkosh with a solid fourth and Paul Parker grabbed
fifth.
The Signmakers Dirt Devils feature event would bring an end to the dominance
of Jon Schultz at the Powercom Speed Zone as Bob Fahser would start in front
and finish in front with his own dominating performance. Despite late pressure
from the 01 of Bryan Monday and a great battle with Nick Firari, Fahser would
grab his first win at the Zone this year. Monday and Firari would finish
second and third while Nick Rennhack would take fourth with Schultz fifth.
