A Brotherly Battle And The Johnsonville Brats Dirt Late Models Visit The Zone
by Dave Buss

On a perfect night for racing at the Powercom Speed Zone, the racing action was fast and furious and lightning fast. The track prep crew did a great job providing a track with two grooves equally as fast despite some equipment problems earlier in the day. Scott Mullen, AJ Diemel, Terry Van Roy, Scott Solomon and Jon Schultz would all find the track just perfect in picking up wins in their respective features.

The Johnsonville Brats Dirt Late Models would take the track for the evening’s first feature and it would be AJ Diemel leading the way. Diemel would grab the lead on lap 4 diving underneath the cars of Curt Martin and Eric Pember in corner two. Diemel would not look back despite having to perform a great save while going through lap traffic and grab his second win at the Zone in 2005. Nick Anvelink, the Fast Qualifier for the evening, would show that his qualifying lap was not a fluke as he used the high side and low side of the track as needed to work his way into the runner up position. Rounding out the top five would be Terry Anvelink, Curt Martin, and Russ Scheffler.

The Grand Nationals would once again prove why they are one of the most exciting classes week in and week out when they took to the track for their feature event. Steve Seitz would show the way early with Larry Richards, Tim Doehling and Bob Cullen giving chase. But it was Terry Van Roy waiting in the wings for the right opportunity to present itself to make his move. The opportunity came when his car took a liking to the high groove and took off. Lap by lap, Van Roy would make his way forward. After a caution Van Roy would start second and make his move grabbing the lead bringing Cullen with him. The cars of Van Roy, Cullen, Doehling, Troy Weich, and Richards would eventually separate themselves from the rest of the field and cross the finish line in that order. It would be Van Roy’s second trip to Victory Lane at the Zone this year.

The Charter Communication Street Stock division would find its eventual victor leading from the start. Scott Solomon used his outside pole position to grab the early lead and never look back, that is until the last two laps that is. Solomon’s dominating performance was almost ruined by Jerry Kope who has been famous for grabbing late wins this year. On this night though, Solomon would prove to be the best holding off the late charge of Kope. Tim Reichenberger would come from the middle of the pack to grab third while Shawn Haydon and Jerry Winkler would run up front all night settling for fourth and fifth respectively.

The Budweiser Modifieds would come down to a battle between brothers as Scott and Brian Mullen would battle it out for the final 7 laps until Scott eventually won out grabbing his first win a the Zone this year. Shannon Volkman would hold the early lead before relinquishing it to Jay Schraufnagel on lap four. Schraufnagel would begin to feel heat from Scott Mullen and it looked like a great battle was forth coming. But mechanical problems would send Schraufnagel spinning and turn the lead over to Scott Mullen on the restart. Scott Mullen would first have to hold off Eric Scribner’s hard charge before going toe to toe with his brother. Scott would lead Brian across the line with Mike Mashl, Brian Drexler, and Volkman following behind.

The Signmakers Dirt Devils would finish the nights events off with another dominating performance turned in by Jon Schultz. Dustin Schwandt would take the point for the early stages of the race but Schultz would eventually overtake him for the lead and drive away. Schwandt would continue to a second place finish by quite a distance himself with Mike Mueller, Ron Koenig and Bryan Monday completing the top 5.
