Speed Zone Victory For Mullen As He Edges Schraufnagel
August 31, 2004
OSHKOSH, WI - Brian Mullen edged Jay Schraufnagel by just inches to take
home top honors in the 20-lap modified A-Main at the Powercom Speed Zone
Tuesday night.
Troy Weich took home the win in the 20-lap Grand National A-main while it
would be Trevor Schmidt winning the street stock finale.
The evening’s activities included 102 drivers including 35 Budweiser
Modifieds, 31 American Auto Sales Street Stocks, 18 Miller Lite Grand
Nationals, and 18 Corporate Impressions Dirt Devils.
Point champions were crowned in all divisions. Schraufnagel took home
top honors in the modified class while it was Jerry Kope gaining the street
stock title. Bob Cullen topped the Grand National division points.
Paul Parker used his front row starting spot to take the lead at the drop of
the green flag in the modified main event. Parker would pull away from
the pack with Scott Lewis jumping into the second spot.
Mullen moved into the mix by lap six after starting 12th on the grid. He
and Lewis closed in on Parker by lap eight with Mullen going to the outside to
go by both Lewis and then Parker.
Schraufnagel, who was shuffled back in the field on the start, finally moved
into the top four on lap 11. It was Schraufnagel gaining the runner-up
spot just before the yellow waved on the 16th lap.
Schraufnagel dove under Mullen in turn four on lap 17 but Mullen shut the
door. Contact between the two saw Schraufnagel slow and fall back from
the leader. The yellow came back out for a final time on the 19th lap
for debris on the track.
Mullen used the inside line with Schraufnagel going to the outside. A
hard charge on the final lap saw Schraufnagel fall inches short as Mullen won
for the first time in 2004 at the Speed Zone.
Benjamin Brinkman, Parker, and Lewis comleted the top five.
Dan Wirl jumped to the lead as the Grand National A-main went green with Weich
moving from his second row spot to take the runner-up spot. It would
take just three more laps before Weich moved around Wirl and took over the top
spot.
Wirl would end up fending off Terry Van Roy over the next 10 laps as Van Roy
moved up to third from his fourth row starting spot. The battle would
slow on lap 15 when Jeff Diedrick stalled.
It would take Van Roy three laps after the caution to take the second spot
from Wirl. By that time Weich was well on his way to victory lane.
Wirl would finish third ahead of Dan Nelson and Bob Cullen.
The caution flag waved before a single lap could be run in the street stock
A-main when Cory Friday lost a tire off his car going down the back
stretch. When the green came back out for the second time it was Mike
Nehmer taking the lead over Jason Kienast.
Nehmer slowed with motor trouble on lap two giving Kienast the lead.
David Madell, Jr., rolled into the top spot on the sixth lap. The yellow
flag flew again at that point when Don VanderGailen stopped his car under the
flag stand.
Schmidt showed his strength after the green came back out as he quickly moved
from fifth to second by lap 10. Schmidt would then drive around Madell
for the lead on the 13th lap and, despite being slowed by a caution flag, he
was never headed on his way to the win.
Madell finished second ahead of Mark Schultz, Scott Beckman, and Adam Pugh.
Ron Koenig dominated the Dirt Devil feature race as he took home the win
over John Schultz, Mike Mueller, Dustin Schwandt.
The program concluded the 2004 season at the Powercom Speed Zone.
