Schraufnagel Wins Again At The Powercom Speed Zone
August 24, 2004

OSHKOSH, WI - Jay Schraufnagel didn’t miss a beat Tuesday night at the Powercom Speed Zone as the modified division point leader won his third straight A-main in the division to highlight Budweiser night at the track.

Schraufnagel’s victory was his sixth at the track in 2004 and extended his point lead over Benjamin Brinkman, the driver that chased Schraufnagel to the checkered flag.

In other action Dan Wirl of Omro won his first ever Miller Lite Grand National A-main while Jerry Kope took home his second American Auto Sales Street Stock A-main.  The Corporate Impressions Dirt Devil main went to Dave Wilkins.

The program, which was completed fully despite ominous skies and traces of rain throughout the night, drew a respectable 82 entries in the four divisions.  Rain delayed just two events during the show.

Schraufnagel took the lead away from Paul Parker on the seventh lap of the Budweiser Modified finale. Just as Schraufnagel swept around and into the top spot Parker lost control of his car and spun in turn three.  Parker would retire from the event.

On the restart it was all Schraufnagel as he drove away from the rest of the field.  Behind him Brinkman would wrestle his way to second as he got around Chris Engels on lap 13.

The yellow waved for the final time in the event on the 18th lap when Joe Jaeger spun his car in turn one.  Brinkman attempted to stay with Schraufnagel on the restart but it was to no avail as the Beaver Dam driver drove away for the win.

John Schultz of Oshkosh finished in the third spot followed closely by Travis Spaulding and Scott Lewis.

David Pavlak led the first half of the 20-lap street stock A-main before Kope took over.  Once in front Kope was able to pull away from the rest of the field.

The caution flag came out on lap 14 for the most serious incident of the night when Craig Leppel flipped his car in turn two.  Leppel was uninjured in the crash but was out for the night.

It was all Kope on the restart as he drove off to the win.  Cory Friday finished second ahead of Ken Feavel, Tim Reichenberger, and Don Vandergailen.

Wirl led the Grand National main event from green to checkered and was never headed in taking the win.  Steve Seitz held down the second spot during the entire event with Terry Van Roy moving up from 10th to finish third.  Bret Wenzel and Jeff Diedrick completed the top five.

Wilkins win in the Dirt Devil division was also convincing.  Dustin Schwandt was second over Dave Fischer.

Racing action continues at the Speed Zone for the final time in 2004 on Tuesday night, August 31st.  Point champions in all four divisions will be crowned.  The first green flag will fall at 7:00 pm.
