Schraufnagel's Fifth Powercom Speed Zone Win A Walk In The Park
August 17, 2004
OSHKOSH, WI - Jay Schraufnagel continued his dominating ways at the
Powercom Speed Zone Tuesday night as the Beaver Dam driver walked away with
the 20-lap Budweiser Modified A-main to highlight action at the track.
Scott Sohrweide of Chilton topped the 20-lap Miller Lite Grand National finale
while Hartford’s Trevor Schmidt won the 20-lap A-main for the American Auto
Sales Street Stocks. Dustin Schwandt took home top honors in the
Corporate Impressions Dirt Devil A-main.
A total of 119 drivers entered the night’s racing activity led by 34
Budweiser modifieds. Other division car counts included 30 street
stocks, 15 Grand Nationals, 16 Dirt Devils, and 24 Midwest Sprint Association
sprint cars.
Larry Zirbel spun his mount before the first lap was completed in the modified
A-main. The second attempt at the start was better with Paul Parker
taking the lead from his front row starting spot. Bob Mann and Brian
Drexler gave chase.
The second yellow flag flew after three laps when Brian Stern spun on the
front stretch and, at the same time, a tire was knocked onto the
track.
Schraufnagel would restart from the fifth spot and it would take just four
laps for him to get to the lead. Scott Lewis would move around Parker
for the second spot with Bob Mann and Brian Drexler following.
The yellow flag came back out again after 13 laps were scored when John
Schultz spun his mount. On the restart it was all Schraufnagel as he
drove away from Lewis and went on to his fifth win at the Speed Zone in 2004.
Lewis would finish second over Mann, Drexler, and George Scheffler.
Travis Spaulding, Benjamin Brinkman, Lee Sohns, Travis Spaulding, and Tim
Robbins completed the top 10.
The 20-lap Grand National A-main went non-stop with Dan Wirl leading the first
13 circuits before a hard charging Sohrweide would sweep into the lead.
Wirl would lose the second spot to Bob Cullen on lap 16 but Sohrweide could
not be caught over the final four laps as he won his second feature of the
year.
Wirl held on for third with Bernie Schommer finishing fourth and Jeff Diedrick
fifth. Bret Wenzel, Troy Weich, Dion Wahl, Dan Nelson, and Dean Stadler
rounded out the first 10.
An early spin by Alan Long slowed the 20-lap street stock A-main after just a
single lap. When the green flew for the second time it was Jason Kienast
taking the lead with David Madell applying the pressure.
Madell would continue to work on Kienast and finally secure the top spot on
lap seven. Madell would begin to stretch his margin over the field
before the yellow waved on the 10th lap when Kelly Brown spun in turn three.
Adam Pugh moved around Kienast after the yellow flag and quickly began to
challenge Madell. Pugh would try and make the outside pass for the lead
but Madell was up to the challenge.
On lap 15 Pugh dove to the inside of Madell coming off of turn four but he was
clipped by then third running Shawn Haydon. Madell spun around coming
off of turn four and was then collected by several other machines. Pugh
was done for the race along with Rich Garb.
The yellow was just what Schmidt needed as he moved quickly from fourth to the
lead and then drove away to his fourth win of the year. Madell held on
for second over Ken Feavel, Jerry Kope, and Kienast. The second five
consisted of Mark Schultz, Jerry Winkler, Gary Neau, Dave Averkamp, and Mike
Nehmer.
Schwandt dominated the Dirt Devil A-main as he took the lead on the first lap
and held it to the checkered flag. J.R. Gutmann finished a distant
second ahead of Ron Koenig, Mike Mueller, and Dave Wilkins.
Racing action continues at the Powercom Speed Zone on Tuesday nights through
the first week in September. The track is located just off of Highway 41
on Highway 76 north of Oshkosh.
