Schepp Powers To Street Stock Showdown Win At Speedzone
The Powercom Speedzone
August 6, 2004
The Great Lakes Maintenance Association presented the Street Stock Showdown at
the Zone in a special Friday night program at the Powercom Speedzone in
Oshkosh. In addition to the American Auto Sales Stocks, the Gibbsville Cheese
INEX Legends and the Corporate Impressions/Signmakers Dirt Devils divisions
were also in action.
Cory Friday of Berlin jumped into the lead from the pole at the start of
the American Auto Sales Stocks 30-lap A-Main event. Nate Schepp of
Beaver Dam, who started alongside Friday, moved to the top groove and
immediately challenged Friday for the top spot. By the end of lap two Schepp
was in command of the lead. The first caution of the event came out for a spin
by Rick Long of Neenah in turn four as the field worked the third lap. Schepp
and Friday battled it out on the restart with Schepp once again taking
command. Schepp began to pull away, but the caution came back out on lap nine
when Tim Fletcher of Burnett dumped fluid onto the track in turn one.
Schepp had a good restart and began to pull away from the rest of the field.
While Schepp began to build a substantial lead, racing back in the pack was
furious. The battle for third was intense between Ken Feavel of Oshkosh, Gary
Neau of Omro, Jerry Winkler of Oshkosh, Dave Averkamp of Oshkosh and Jerry
Kope of Oshkosh. In the meantime, Trevor Schmidt of Hartford, Tim
Reichenberger of Oshkosh and F.W. Formiller of Oshkosh were fighting their way
up from the back and moved into the top ten. The final caution of the
event came out on lap twenty-three for Mark Schultz of Van Dyne in turn four.
The caution wiped out the big lead held by Schepp as the field bunched up for
the restart. Dave Averkamp was now in second. On the restart Schepp led the
field down into turn one and Averkamp immediately put the pressure on Schepp.
Averkamp worked the low groove while Schepp remained up on top. The two
battled it out the rest of the way with Averkamp making one last try out of
turn four, but Schepp was up to the challenge and powered his way across the
line in first. Jerry Kope followed Schepp and Averkamp to the checkered flag
to claim the third position. Cory Friday finished a strong run with a fourth
place finish. Trevor Schmidt, who had started seventeenth, drove to fifth. Ken
Feavel ran in the thick of the battle near the front and finished in sixth.
Tim Reichenberger moved up from the sixth row to finish in seventh. F.W.
Formiller also moved up from the seventh row to finish in eighth. Dannon
Tessmer of Allenton started the event in row ten and worked his way up to take
ninth. Dan Troyan of Menomonee Falls was tenth.
Eric Barth of Sauk City was victorious for the third time in four appearances
for the Gibbsville Cheese INEX Legends when he drove to the win in the 20-lap
A-Main. Darwin Banes of Beaver Dam ran well finishing in second after leading
the first eleven laps. Joel Wyttenbach of Sauk City came across the line in
third. George Giesen followed in fourth. Adam Reed of Slinger moved up through
the pack to take fifth.
Jasper Drengler of Shawano captured his fifth win of the season when he drove
to victory in the 20-lap Corporate Impressions/Signmakers Dirt Devils A-Main.
Kip Klawitter of Berlin ran well to finish in second. J.R. Gutman of Waupun
charged from the fifth row to finish in third. Early race leader Mike Mueller
of Waupun drove to fourth. Matthew DeWilde of Neenah had his best race of the
season finishing in fifth.
In preliminary action, Trevor Schmidt drove to the win in the stocks B-Main.
David Madell Jr. of Poy Sippi was victorious in the stocks C-Main. Stocks heat
race wins were recorded by Jerry Kope, Cory Friday, Jeff Janke of Greenville
and Mark Schultz. Legend heat race wins went to Eric Barth and Warren Ropp of
Kalona, IA. Mike Mueller and Jasper Drengler won the dirt devil heats.
