Weich Nips Formiller In Speed Zone Grand National Thriller
OSHKOSH, WI - Troy Weich of Fond du Lac beat Oshkosh driver Frank Formiller to
the line by less than six inches to win the 20-lap Grand National A-main to
highlight action at the Powercom Speed Zone Tuesday night.
Eric Scribner of Kiel topped the 20-lap modified finale while it was hometown
driver Jerry Kope winning the street stock A-main. Ron Koenig topped the
Dirt Devil A-main.
A total of 91 cars checked into the pit area for the show led by 31 Budweiser
Modifieds. The American Auto Sales Street Stock class boasted 27 entries
while there were 17 Miller Lite Grand National Stock Cars and 16 Signmakers
Dirt Devils.
Weich’s victory in the Grand National A-main came after he took over the top
spot from Formiller on lap 10. Formiller had led the first nine laps of
the race and had a large lead when the yellow flag waved when Dan Nelson spun
his car in turn four.
When the green flag waved again Weich dove to the inside of the track and took
the lead away from Formiller. Formiller fell off the pace during the
next six laps but rolled back up on Weich as the race neared its conclusion.
Weich continued to use the low line on the track with Formiller able to make a
run at him on the final circuit but it would be Weich winning by inches.
Terry Van Roy finished third over Tim Doehling and Bob Cullen.
Scribner made quick work of the modified field in the 20-lap A-main.
After taking over the top spot from Joe McGrath after a lap five yellow flag
Scribner kept his mount on the bottom side of the track and easily drove away
from the field to take his first win of the year at the track.
Larry Zirbel dropped to the bottom side of the track and would drive to second
and finish in that spot. After starting 12th and falling as far back as
15th Jay Schraufnagel, who is the current point leader at the track, rallied
to finish third.
McGrath, the only other leader in the race, finished fourth over Benjamin
Brinkman. The second five consisted of Travis Spaulding, Chris Engels,
Ryan Besaw, Dave Schneider, and Dennis Haldeman.
Kope, who started in the 12th spot, was the benefactor of a lap 15 yellow flag
that slowed the street stock A-main. Prior to that he was well behind
Jeff Jahnke and Mark Schultz as they raced for the top spot. When
the green waved Kope dove inside both cars and gained the lead as Jahnke fell
to second over Schultz.
Kope would then survive a lap 17 caution flag for debris on the track and go
on to take the victory. Tim Reichenberger edged Schultz to take home
second place money while Jahnke and Trevor Schmidt completed the top five.
Koenig dominated the 20-lap Dirt Devil feature race as he topped Mike Mueller
by some four seconds. Jasper Drengler finished third of J.R. Gutman and
Gordon Lewis.
Racing action continues each Tuesday night at the Speed Zone featuring at
least four divisions. The first race hits the track at 7:00
pm.
The Powercom Speed Zone is located just off of Highway 41 on Highway 76 at the
Sunnyview Expo Grounds.
