Hedrick Wins Speed Zone Modified Main As Record Field Crowds The Pit Area
June 8, 2004
OSHKOSH, WI - Jeremie Hedrick won a spirited battle over Brian Mullen and Jay
Schraufnagel to win the 20-lap modified feature at the Powercom Speed Zone
Tuesday night.
The victory for Hedrick was his first ever at the track and marked the first
time this season he had won a main event at any area track. Hedrick was
stripped of a win earlier this season due to a post race infraction at the
Shawano Speedway.
Bob Cullen won the 20-lap Grand National feature event while Tim Reichenberger
won the street stock main event.
A strong field showed up for the first event held at the track after two
straight rainouts. A total of 118 machines checked into the pit area
including a track record 49 modifieds.
Scott Derenne took the lead at the drop of the green flag in the 20-lap
Budweiser modified feature over Jeremie Hedrick, Brian Stern, and Russ
Reinwald. Derenne pulled away from the field and held the spot when the
yellow flag waved on lap three when Stern spun on the frontstretch and was
collected by Travis Spaulding.
Derenne was able to hold off Hedrick and Reinwald for three laps before
Reinwald dove under both the first and second place cars and took the
lead. Reinwald brought Hedrick to second with Brian Mullen moving into
fourth.
Reinwald made contact with Sturm, who was being lapped, as the race neared the
halfway point. Reinwald’s car went airborne and ended up with a flat
tire. Reinwald would lose the lead as he stopped on the track and was
forced to the pit area.
Hedrick inherited the top spot with Mullen, Schraufnagel, Larry Zirbel, and
Derenne following. Hedrick would pull Mullen and Schraufangel away from
the rest of the field.
Running the top side of the track Hedrick kept Mullen and Schraufnagel behind
over the last half of the race. Mullen dove low on the last lap but
could not get past Hedrick and settled for second. Mike Mashl and Scott
Mullen completed the top five.
“Any time you have Mullen and Schraufnagel behind you it’s going to be
tough but tonight it worked out for us,” said Hedrick. “The car was
great and the top of the track was the place to be.”
Steve Seitz led the first four laps of the Miller Lite Grand National feature
before Frank Formiller jumped into the lead. The yellow waved for the
first time on lap five when Bob Mann spun his car in turn two.
Back under green Terry Van Roy caught everyone’s attention as he moved from
the back into the top five by lap eight. Van Roy was on the charge and
moved to fourth a lap later as he chased Formiller, Seitz, and Cullen.
Van Roy’s charge came to a rest on lap 13 when he and Scott Sorhweide got
hooked together going down the backstretch. The yellow waved as both
cars stopped in turn three.
Formiller remained in the lead as the green waved again with Cullen and Seitz
in tow. Cullen drove under Formiller for the lead in turn one and held
it as the field came back around for lap 14. Formiller then spun in turn
two and was forced to the back of the pack.
Cullen would hold on to take the win over Seitz, Bret Wenzel, Jeff Diedrick,
and Van Roy.
Jerry Winkler led the opening two laps of the American Auto Sales street stock
feature before Dale Averkamp took the top spot. A pair of early
cautions, both of which saw two-time race winner Trevor Schmidt being
involved, slowed the action.
Mark Schultz became the third leader as he took the spot on lap six and then
began to pull away from Averkamp. Reichenberger, Jerry Kope, and Ken
Feavel all gave chase.
Reichenberger moved to second on lap nine and then caught a yellow flag when
Cory Friday spun his car and yellow flag was back out again.
Reichenberger moved to the inside on Schultz and became the fourth leader on
lap 11. Schultz didn’t give up as he drove right back up on
Reichenberger. The yellow would wave again as Jeff Jahnke spun in turn
two on the 14th lap.
Reichenberger led the rest of the way to take the win over Schultz, Kope,
Feavel, and Winkler.
Drengler was the dominant car in the Dirt Devil feature event as he drove away
from the field to take the win. Mike Mueller finished in the second spot
followed by Dave Wilkins, Kip Klawitter and Derek Schwandt.
Racing action continues at the Speed Zone on Tuesday night, June 15th, with a
full racing program before taking a week off on June 22nd. The IRA
Sprint Cars will make their only 2004 appearance at the track on Tuesday
night, June
29th.
The Powercom Speed Zone is located just off of Highway 41 on Highway 76, north
of Oshkosh, at the Sunnyview Expo Grounds. For more information contact
