Powercom Speed Zone Opener All Schraufnagel
May 4, 2004

OSHKOSH, WI - Jay Schraufnagel drew the pole position for the season opening Budweiser Modified feature race Tuesday night at the Powercom Speed Zone.  The checkered could have been thrown then.

In the end, it played out as expected as the dominant driver in the division at the Speed Zone over the past three years notched yet another victory as he dominated the event to highlight the Karavan Trailer Sales Icebreaker 75.

Other feature winners on the evening included Trevor Schmidt of Hartford in the American Auto Sales street stocks, Bob Cullen of Chilton in the Miller Lite Grand National Stock Cars, and Dustin Schwandt in the Corporate Impressions Dirt Devils.

The opening show ran under cool conditions with 85 cars checking into the pit area.  Track conditions were ideal which is a drastic change over past early season races at the track.

“I just love racing here at this track,” said Schraufnagel, a Beaver Dam resident, from victory lane.  “It’s about the best track around.  It helps when you start up in the front but everything went well tonight.  The car was great.”

Schraufnagel was only slowed by a pair of caution flags on his way to the win.  The yellow waved on lap eight for an incident involving Dave Schneider and Brian Drexler in turn three.  It came back out again four laps later when Ron Besaw spun his car in turn two.

Despite having the field bunched behind Schraufnagel was able pull away at will and claimed the win over Russ Reinwald, Scott Lewis, Dennis Schultz, and Benjamin Brinkman.

Schmidt’s win in the street stock 20-lap finale came at the hands of a fast closing Tim Reichenberger.  Following a caution with two laps remaining Reichenberger made a hard charge at Schmidt but couldn’t get around him as the pair raced to the checkered flag.

Defending track champion Jerry Kope finished third followed by Jeff Janke and Shawn Hayden.

Cullen was the benefactor of a caution flag in his run to the Grand National Stock Car win.  As the field strung out and Tim Doehling held an advantage of several car lengths over the rest of the pack a marker tire in turn four was knocked onto the track bringing out a field bunching yellow.

Cullen wasted little time in going on the attack from the third spot as he jumped around second running Jeff Diedrick and immediately took the lead away from Doehling.

The final three laps were all Cullen as he led Doehling, Diedrick, Terry Van Roy, and Brian Gilles to the stripe.

Schwandt fought off a race long challenge from John Schultz to win the 15-lap Dirt Devil feature.  Pat Klawitter finished third over Mike Mueller and Chris Cottrell.

Racing action continues at the Powercom Speed Zone Tuesday night, May 11th, with all four divisions back for a full night plus the addition of the INEX Legend Cars sponsored by Gibbsville Cheese.  The first green flag will fall at 7:00 pm.  The Powercom Speed Zone is located on Highway 76, just south of Highway 41, in Oshkosh.
