Powercom Speed Zone Season Opener Planned For May 4th
December 1, 2003
OSHKOSH, WI – The 2004 racing season at the Powercom Speed Zone in Oshkosh
will commence on Tuesday night, May 4th, as the track hosts the Karavan
Trailer Sales Icebreaker 75.
Scheduled two full weeks earlier than the 2003 lidlifter, Wisconsin
Motorsports General Manager Rex Melius feels confident everything will be in
place for the first night of racing at the Sunnyview Expo Grounds.
“This past year was a learning process at the Speed Zone for not only myself
but for many of the people involved with the track,” Melius said. “I
didn’t know what to expect coming out of the gate there but things really
picked up and fell into place as the summer went on.
“I was a little hesitant in scheduling a show there the first week in May
but I know that things will be ready to go. Race fans are so hungry to
see something in the spring that it’s best to get going. By pushing
the date up it gives us a couple of extra shows at the Speed Zone, something
the fans have been asking for.”
The Karavan Trailer Sales sponsored show will conclude with 75 laps of feature
racing which includes the first night in the chase for the 2004 track
championship in all divisions. Headlined by the Speed Zone’s
competitive Modified class, the program will also see the American Auto Sales
Street Stock, Grand National, and Corporate Impressions/Quick Signs Dirt Devil
divisions take to the track.
“We’re basically going with four classes weekly at the Speed Zone,”
Melius said. “It was such a time crunch with an extra division in
there. The hobby stock class ran its course, so to speak. It was a
good idea in the beginning because I think we need more forms of racing that
are affordable but this one never caught on.
“It might actually help our car counts in some of the other divisions.
I think that the guys that were running hobby stocks were out here for
fun. The Corporate Impressions/Quick Signs Dirt Devils might be just the
spot for them. Or, they can convert their car over and race with the
American Auto Sales Street Stocks.”
A full schedule will be released in the near future for the Powercom Speed
Zone. Fans can look for several special events to dot the calendar along
with a busy slate of regular Tuesday night programs.
“There will be something for everyone, no doubt about that,” Melius
concluded. “When the schedule is released people will be happy.
The staff has done their best to put together a slate of events that get the
most use out of the facility. It should be a great year at the Speed
Zone.”
Opening night activities will see spectator gates open at 5:00 pm with the
first green flag set to wave at 7:00 pm. The Powercom Speed Zone is
located just off of Highway 41 on Highway 45, three miles north of
Oshkosh. For more information contact Wisconsin Motorsports at (920)
