Some Familiar Faces And Some New Faces Visit Victory Lane

By Dave Buss

The streak continued as the Powercom Speedzone was once again greeted with great weather for racing. The fans responded to the great temperatures and showed up in force with many of them donning DirtStripper Touchless car wash t-shirts making them eligible for some great prizes. The racing action would be fierce all night long and produced a few first time winners and a wild quadruple barrel role accident on the front stretch. Rob Persha took that wild ride and walked away uninjured; unfortunately the same could not be said for his car.

The Golf Central/Jurrasic Dirt Devil division A-Main was jasper Drengler’s to lose from the third lap on as he was able to drive past the 11x of Jon Schultz. The race would run caution free for almost the entire race with the only real battle taking place for the fifth position between Mike Mueller, Chris Cottrell and William Angermeyer with Cottrell eventually winning out and continuing on towards the front. The outcome of the race seemed all but secured as Drengler took the white flag, however going into corner one the 01 car would lose a tire and bring out the caution. With Drengler in the pit area, Schultz would inherit the lead and hold onto it for a one lap dash to the checkers. Cottrell, Angermeyer, Loren Rangeloff, and Mueller would round out the top five spots.

The Quick Sign/Corporate Impressions Hobby Stock division would belong to Russ Davison as he jumped out to an early lead on lap 1 and never let go. The race would be slowed by three cautions with the scariest crash occurring on lap one as Nate Persha went tumbling down the front stretch. After the caution and ensuing clean up the battles began to heat up behind Davison as Frank Calabrese began to make some noise. Calabrese would first beat out Rick Long for third and then begin to work on Korey Krupp for second. Calabrese would take the second spot and Long would follow right behind him to move into third. With a couple laps to go, Long would move past Krupp and take Bob Voight with him dropping Krupp to fifth. Davison had set sail and never look back cruising to the victory. Calabrese, Long, Voight, and Krupp would complete the top five.

The Grand National division A-Main would produce a first time winner at the Powercom Speedzone as Jeremy Christians, visiting for the second time this year, would drive to an impressive victory. With Christians driving away, the 56 of Schommer would give the fans some racing action to watch. Schommer would first beat out Frank Formiller for third and then wrestle away second from Tim Doehling. The 09 of Terry Van Roy would slide into the third spot while Schommer tried with no success to track down Christians. In a battle for a top five spot with the current season point leaders (Bob Cullen and Brian Gilles), Formiller would go one for two  as Cullen would beat him out for fifth but he would hold off Gilles for the sixth spot. After a late caution bunching things up, Christians picked up where left off and shot back to a commanding lead and would hold it to the checkered flag. Schommer, Van Roy, Cullen and Doehling would follow him across the line, respectively.

The American Auto Stocks division would bring a familiar face to Victory Lane as Gary Neau would make another visit. Neau would not have the same smooth sailing as many of the other winners on this night. Neau took the green flag in the middle of the pack and worked his way forward. Adam Pugh would take the lead away form Russ Dietzen when Dietzen would spin on his own in front of the oncoming pack of cars. After the restart, Paul DeLap and Dietzen would battle it out for the lead with Dietzen holding firm to the number one position. Meanwhile, Neau was working his way forward and bringing Shawn Haydon with him. After a couple of caution flags slowing the action, Dale Averkamp, who had quietly moved to the front, stormed to the front of the pack. His lead would be short lived as the 28 lost a tire going into corner 1. Keeping it in the family after the caution, Dave Averkamp would assume the lead position with Neau right behind him. On lap 14, Neau made his move and slipped past Averkamp for the lead. Dave Averkamp, Adam Pugh, Jerry Kope, and Haydon would complete the top five behind the 07 of Neau.

In a special consolation race for the Stock division Great Lakes Maintenance Association put up prize money for the top five finishers. David Madell Jr would beat out Eric Hawkins, Patty Winkler, Tim Montonati, and Charlie Rechek for the win.

The Suburban Motors Harley Davidson/Buell Modified division would produce first time visitor to Victory Lane. Not only was it the first visit to Powercom Speedzone’s Victory Lane for Chad Rathke but the first time he ever visited Victory Lane in the Modified division. Early in the race, Rathke would win the battle for second against Victor Duket, Dennis Schultz, and Ben Brinkman for the second spot behind Tim Van De Hei. The 10s of Jay Schraufnagel battled into the third spot and began to pressure Van De Hei for the lead with Rathke. The 10s and 9 would slip past the 59 of Van de Hei on lap 5. Meanwhile, current points leader, Time Lemirande would make his way up to the third spot and begin to challenge Rathke who had lost the lead to Schraufnagel. On lap 10, Lemirande slipped past Schraufnagel but Schraufnagel would not stand for it as he worked back past Lemirande. Rathke would remain in third and get the break he was looking for when the 5 and 10s got together causing a caution and sending both cars to the back of the pack. Caution would fly with one lap remaining setting up a one lap shoot out. Rathke got the jump at the drop of the flag and took Dennis Schultz, Scott Lewis, Chris Engels, and Jay Schraufnagel with him to complete the top five.

The fans were treated to some special PowderPuff racing following regular action and producing some excitement of their own. Victories would be secured by Christina Messenger, Lauri Piper, Debbie King, and Amanda Cottrell.

The Regular season ends next week on August 26, 2003 with some great point battles shaping up. On Monday, September 1st, the MSA Sprints and the Late Models make their return for a special Twi-Light show at the Powercom Speedzone.
